Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Ledger

Richard sat down on the edge of the sofa, looking down at his worn hands. The heavy silence in the hotel room felt suffocating.
"Go on," I prompted, crossing my arms. "What does this have to do with what Ashley did to Lily?"
"Everything," Richard sighed, pushing the ledger toward me. "Your mother didn't just spoil Ashley. She created a monster, and she's been hiding criminal behavior for over a decade. Look at page forty-two."
I flipped open the yellowed pages. Inside were bank receipts, police report summaries, and hand-written diary entries by my mother. As my eyes scanned the text, the blood drained from my face.
Years ago, long before Lily was born, Ashley had been involved in a hit-and-run accident while driving under the influence. Instead of letting her face justice, my mother had bribed a witness, forged vehicle repair documents, and pinned the blame on an innocent local delivery driver who subsequently lost his job and spent months in legal limbo.
Further down the page, there were records of shoplifting arrests, school expulsions for severe assault, and massive cash payouts made from a secret trust fund—a trust fund that my grandfather had originally set up equally for both me and Ashley, but which my mother had systematically drained on Ashley's behalf.
"She... she covered up a hit-and-run?" I whispered, looking up at Richard in absolute horror.
"And that's just the tip of the iceberg," Richard confessed, shaking his head. "Your mother has been enabling Ashley's psychopathic tendencies because she's terrified that if Ashley ever faces a real prison sentence, she'll expose your mother's illegal financial schemes. They are co-dependent accomplices in a web of deceit."
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. The family I thought I knew was nothing more than an organized facade protecting a violent criminal.
"Why are you telling me this now, Richard?" I asked sharply. "You've lived with my mother for twenty years. You always backed her up."
May you like
"Because I watched a four-year-old child almost lose her eye on Saturday," Richard said, his eyes welling with tears. "I realized that if I stayed silent, I was just as guilty as them. I copied these files, Emily. I gave the originals to Detective Miller this morning."
A heavy weight lifted from my shoulders, mixed with a fierce, burning determination. The walls were finally crashing down on my family's empire of lies. And we were going to make sure justice was fully served.
