Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Power

Grant Caldwell’s face was a study in absolute terror. The arrogant, wealthy neighborhood patriarch who had boasted about his connections and his brother the federal judge suddenly realized he was standing face-to-face with a machine far larger and more merciless than any civil court in the country.
"Wait—wait a minute!" Grant stammered, holding up his hands defensively as two tactical operatives stepped closer to him and Natalie. "There's been a mistake! This is just a family disagreement! We were just joking around! Right, Natalie? Tell her we were just joking!"
Natalie couldn't speak. She was staring at the matte-black helicopters hovering silently above our street, their rotors casting rhythmic shadows over the horrified faces of our neighbors. She looked down at her expensive shoes, then up at me, realization finally dawning on her.
"You... you weren't just a clerk," Natalie whispered, her voice cracking. "All those years... the long absences... the locked cases... you weren't doing paperwork."
"Natalie," I said, standing up and smoothing my blouse, "you spent fifteen years complaining that I threw my life away on a dull government desk job because you couldn't fathom that a woman might choose a path beyond country clubs and real estate portfolios. You brought your family here today to break me in front of my daughter. That was your first mistake."
I turned my attention back to Captain Reynolds. "Captain, check their digital footprints. Pull every corporate ledger, tax evasion record, and shell company associated with Grant Caldwell Enterprises. Let's see how much of that suburban wealth was built on legal foundations."
"Already running diagnostics, Major," Captain Reynolds replied, tapping a sleek wrist-mounted terminal. "Our tactical cyber unit bypassed their local firewall three minutes before we touched down. We have full access to their offshore accounts, tax fraud documents, and illicit municipal kickbacks."
Grant let out a choked sound, his knees visibly shaking. "You can't do that! That's illegal! I'll call my lawyer! I'll call the FBI!"
"The FBI is currently receiving our data packet," Captain Reynolds deadpanned.
Across the street, neighbors were peering through their windows or standing in frozen clusters on their porches, whispering frantically as they watched the most elite military extraction unit in the country dismantle the neighborhood bully in broad daylight.
Travis groaned in pain, finally sinking to his knees on the grass. His broken arm hung limply, a stark physical reminder of the gulf between the illusion of power and the reality of lethal competence.

"Please," Travis whimpered, looking up at me through sweat-stained hair. "My arm... it hurts..."
"Get him a field medic," I instructed Captain Reynolds, turning my back on them. "Then load them into the transport. They need a comprehensive debriefing on the difference between local property lines and federal jurisdiction."
