Chapter 3 - The Revelation of Shadow

"What... what did you do?" Travis stammered, his face twisting from shock into a mask of humiliated rage. He tried to straighten his right arm, but the elbow joint refused to lock properly, hanging at a strange, unnatural angle.
The four muscle-bound gym rats behind him stopped smirking. They exchanged glances, suddenly realizing that the desk clerk they had laughed at five seconds ago had just dismantled their gym's heavyweight champion with a single, economic movement.
"You don't know how to throw a punch, Travis," I said calmly, letting the black MMA gloves drop from my fingers onto the grass. "You lead with your shoulder, you drop your guard, and you telegraph your intentions from three feet away. If you tried that in a real theater, you’d be a casualty report before breakfast."
Grant Caldwell surged forward, his face purple with indignation. He pointed a thick, diamond-ringed finger at my face.
"You bitch!" Grant roared, forgetting his manners in front of the entire neighborhood. "You crippled my son! Call the police! Call an ambulance! Natalie, look at what your psycho sister did!"
Natalie stared at me, her mouth slightly open. The bored, superior expression had vanished entirely, replaced by raw, primal panic. She rushed to her husband's side, grabbing Travis's uninjured arm.
"Travis! Are you okay? Oh god, your arm—"
"Shut up, Natalie," Travis snarled, shoving her away roughly as he tried to stand. He glared at me, his eyes burning with venom. "You cheated! You sucker-punched me! You're nothing! You're just a washed-up bureaucrat!"
"A bureaucrat?" A deep, gravelly voice cut through the tension.
Mr. Palmer stepped forward from the edge of the crowd. The old man took off his faded baseball cap, running a weathered hand over his gray hair, and looked directly at Grant Caldwell.
"Grant, you pompous fool," Mr. Palmer said, his voice ringing with quiet authority. "I served thirty years in the Corps. I know a combat instructor when I see one. You and your pampered boy just walked into a buzzsaw and blamed the blade for cutting you."
"Mind your own business, old man!" Grant yelled, backing away slightly as Travis clutched his dangling arm. "She assaulted my son on private property! We're pressing charges! We'll sue her into the stone age! We'll take her house, her car, and that brat of hers!"
At the mention of Sophie, something inside my chest shifted—a cold, heavy weight that locked every muscle into absolute, terrifying focus.
Threaten me? Fine. Threaten my career? Irrelevant.
Threaten my daughter? That crossed a line from civilian dispute into tactical elimination.
I reached slowly into the pocket of my faded cotton blouse, pulled out a small, encrypted satellite burner phone, and pressed a single pre-programmed speed-dial button. I held it to my ear as the secure line connected on the first ring.

"This is Major Claire Vance," I said clearly, looking straight into Grant Caldwell’s terrified eyes. "Red-Dot protocol active at Sector Four, Virginia residential zone. Local civilian assets have initiated a hostile legal and physical threat against a protected dependent. I require an immediate verification team on-site to secure the perimeter and review regional asset clearance files."
A crisp, metallic voice echoed through the tiny speaker, loud enough for the people standing closest to hear: Copy that, Major Vance. Authorization code confirmed. Tactical extraction and legal neutralization units inbound. ETA: four minutes.
