Chapter 9 - The Horizon of Grace

That evening, I drove home just as the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep rose.

Our new home was a quiet, sunlit craftsman house tucked into a safe, tree-lined neighborhood just minutes from the park. There was no mortgage hanging over us like a guillotine, no toxic in-laws lurking in the background, and no shadow of fear threatening our peace.

When I unlocked the front door, the rich scent of homemade chicken soup drifted from the kitchen. Clara greeted me with a quiet nod before heading out for the evening.

I walked upstairs down the carpeted hallway and pushed open the door to Lyra’s bedroom. The walls were painted a calm, soothing sage green, adorned with hand-painted constellations and bright silver stars.

Lyra was sitting in the middle of her plush play mat, stacking wooden blocks with intense concentration. When she heard the door click open, her head snapped up.

Her face lit up with an incandescent, gummy smile.

“Mama!” she babbled brightly, crawling across the floor as fast as her chubby legs could carry her, reaching her little arms up toward me.

May you like

I dropped to my knees, scooping her up into my arms and burying my face in her soft, sweet-smelling hair. I squeezed her tight, feeling the strong, healthy thump of her little heart beating steadily against my chest.

We had survived the dark water. We had weathered the storm. And as I carried her down to the kitchen to watch the stars come out through the bay window, I knew that our future was brighter and more secure than I had ever dared to dream.
