Chapter 10 - To ForeverThe sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Tennessee sky in brilliant shades of violet, orange, and deep indigo. The streetlights outside flickered to life one by one, casting a warm, welcoming glow across our front porch.

After putting Frederick down for a peaceful, dreamless sleep in his nursery—where no fever or fear could ever reach him again—Amy and I stepped out onto the back patio with two mugs of hot chamomile tea.

The night air was crisp and refreshing. We sat side by side on the wooden porch swing, gently rocking back and forth as the rhythmic creak of the chains filled the quiet evening.

Amy rested her head comfortably on my shoulder, letting out a long, contented sigh.

“Do you ever think about how close we came to losing everything?” she asked softly, her fingers intertwining with mine.

I looked down at our joined hands, then out across our quiet, peaceful backyard where the twinkling fairy lights we had hung last month cast a gentle golden shimmer across the grass.

“I used to,” I admitted quietly, kissing the top of her head. “For a long time, I beat myself up for not seeing the signs sooner, for trusting the wrong person, for letting that toxicity into our lives.”

“And now?” she asked, looking up into my eyes with a tender, reassuring smile.

“Now, I realize that sometimes life has to break down completely so you can rebuild it the right way,” I said, wrapping my arm tightly around her shoulders. “We didn't just survive that night, Amy. We forged something stronger. A foundation built on trust, truth, and genuine love that no one can ever tear down.”

She smiled brightly, leaning in to kiss my lips in the cool autumn air.

“To new beginnings,” she whispered against my mouth.

“To forever,” I replied.

The past was gone, locked away behind prison bars and bitter memories. Ahead of us lay a future filled with boundless light, unconditional warmth, and a home that truly belonged to us.
