Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the Office

A week after Mark and Eleanor were evicted, I returned to my regional corporate headquarters in downtown New York for a crucial board meeting. As the majority shareholder and chief executive of Apex Technologies, my presence was required to finalize our quarterly acquisition strategy.
I stepped out of the private elevator onto the executive floor, dressed in a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, my stride confident and resolute. My executive assistant, David, rushed forward with a tablet and a steaming cup of green tea.
“Good morning, Ms. Sterling. The board members are already assembled in Conference Room A,” David reported briskly. “Also, we had an unusual visitor in the lobby about twenty minutes ago.”
I paused, raising an eyebrow. “A visitor? Who?”
“Mark Davis,” David said, wincing slightly. “He somehow managed to bypass security by using an old badge from when he used to visit you here. Security intercepted him before he could reach the executive suites, but he’s currently being held downstairs by building management.”
A cold amusement washed over me. Mark had traveled all the way from our hometown to New York, desperate enough to try storming my corporate headquarters.
“Let him up, David,” I said smoothly.
David blinked in surprise. “Are you sure, Ms. Sterling? He was shouting obscenities in the lobby and threatening to make a scene.”
“Let him up,” I repeated, a sharp glint in my eye. “Bring him to my private office in ten minutes. I want to see just how low he’s willing to sink.”
True to my word, ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of my expansive corner office swung open. Mark stumbled inside, looking like a ghost of the arrogant man he used to be. His designer suit was wrinkled and stained, his hair unwashed, and his eyes bloodshot and frantic. The effortless confidence he once projected was entirely gone, replaced by a pathetic, sweat-soaked desperation.
“Clara! Oh, thank god!” Mark cried out, stumbling forward as if he wanted to embrace me.
I held up a single hand, stopping him dead in his tracks. Two burly corporate security guards stood just outside the open door, watching his every move.
“Keep your distance, Mark,” I said coldly, remaining seated behind my massive mahogany desk.
Mark slammed his hands onto the desk, leaning forward with a wild, desperate expression. “Are you out of your mind? You ruined my life! The police arrested my mother yesterday morning on elder abuse charges! I’m facing criminal neglect! My accounts are empty, my car was repossessed by the bank, and Jessica blocked my number and took my son! I have nothing left, Clara! Absolutely nothing!”
“You never had anything, Mark,” I replied evenly, resting my chin on my intertwined fingers. “Everything you thought you owned was built on my labor, my sweat, and my sacrifices. And while I was working myself to the bone to provide for you, you were abusing my mother and funding a secret family with my money.”
Mark’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. The mask slipped completely.
“You ungrateful bitch!” he roared, slamming his fist onto the desk so hard the coffee mug rattled. “I gave you a family! I gave you children! You were nothing before you met me—just a nerdy computer programmer with no social life! You owe me everything you have! If you don’t drop the charges, sign over half your assets, and bail me out right now, I will destroy your reputation! I’ll tell the board that you’re mentally unstable! I’ll ruin you!”
I didn’t even flinch. I simply pressed a button on my desk intercom.
“David, please send in Officer Miller from the corporate security detail, along with the two detectives waiting outside.”
The office door opened immediately. Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a detective holding a formal arrest warrant.
Mark spun around, his eyes widening in pure terror as the detective stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Mark Davis, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and falsification of financial documents,” the detective stated clearly, grabbing Mark by the arm.
“No! You can’t do this! Clara, stop them! Clara!” Mark screamed, thrashing wildly as the officers pinned his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs into place.

“Have a nice time in prison, Mark,” I said softly, watching without an ounce of pity as my former husband was dragged out of my office in chains.
The door clicked shut, leaving absolute silence in its wake. I took a calm sip of my tea, looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the magnificent New York skyline, and smiled. The rot was finally cleared away.
