Chapter 9 - Promises Kept

The evening air carried the crisp, clean scent of spring, and for the first time in as long as I could remember, the knot of tension that usually sat permanently in my chest felt loose.
I looked over at Nora. In the soft twilight, her eyes were bright, filled with a quiet strength and an unyielding resilience that had completely captivated me from the moment she stepped out from behind that supply cart.
"You know," I said softly, "when you stepped out with those folded towels that night, I thought you were just another terrified hospital worker caught in the middle of a bad situation."
Nora smiled, looking down at her hands resting on the stone balustrade. "And when you pointed a gun at the chief surgeon's head, I thought you were just another arrogant, dangerous billionaire who thought rules didn't apply to him."
"Were you wrong?" I asked, a faint trace of amusement in my voice.
"About the billionaire part? No, you're definitely arrogant," she joked lightly. Then her expression softened, turning serious as she looked up to meet my gaze. "But you kept your promise. You didn't let anyone hurt your family. And you didn't stop until justice was actually served—not just for your nephew, but for every patient those monsters had been exploiting for years."
"I told you," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying all the quiet certainty in the world. "I don't break promises."
Nora didn't look away. The silence between us stretched, not with the heavy, suffocating tension of that hospital suite months ago, but with a warm, electric anticipation.

"Good," she whispered, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Because I'm holding you to that."
I reached out, my fingers brushing against hers on the cool stone. She didn't pull away. Instead, she turned her hand over, intertwining her fingers securely with mine.
