Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

The winter snow blanketed the city in a pristine, quiet white, transforming the estate gardens into a glittering wonderland. New Year’s Eve arrived with a sense of profound peace and renewal. We didn’t host a grand gala or venture out into the freezing city streets; instead, we celebrated quietly at home.
My father, Rebecca Shaw, and a few close, trusted members of our executive leadership team gathered in the grand dining room. There were no toasts to past grudges or fallen enemies. Instead, our glasses clicked together to toast the future—to new beginnings, unshakeable integrity, and the bright, limitless horizons ahead.
At midnight, I slipped away from the chatter of the dining room and walked down the candlelit hallway to the nursery.
The room was bathed in the soft blue glow of a nightlight. Noah, Caleb, and Luke were fast asleep in their cribs, breathing in slow, synchronized harmony. Their tiny chests rose and fell peacefully, untouched by the storms of the past year.
I walked over to Noah’s crib, gently brushing a soft curl from his forehead. He stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh before settling back into his deep sleep.
I thought back to that sterile hospital room less than a year ago—the stinging pain of the surgical incision, the cruel sneer on Ethan’s face as he tossed the divorce papers onto my blanket, and the chilling words: “Look at you. Who could ever want you now?”

If I could speak to myself in that moment, standing broken and bleeding in the hospital bed, I would tell her not to fear the fire. I would tell her that the man walking out the door was taking away dead weight, making space for an extraordinary life she hadn't yet dared to imagine.
I turned away from the crib and walked toward the tall window overlooking the snow-covered estate. The city skyline twinkled in the distance, alive with endless possibility.
