Chapter 7 - The Unravelling Debt

The release of the pocket watch should have been the final bureaucratic footnote in the miserable saga of my marriage. Instead, it triggered a bizarre chain reaction that revealed just how deeply deceitful Ethan’s life had truly been.
Three days after authorizing the release, Rebecca called me directly, her voice laced with sharp bewilderment.
“Claire, you’re not going to believe this,” Rebecca said without preamble.
“What happened? Did the marshals have trouble accessing the safety deposit box?”
“No,” Rebecca replied. “The bank vault opened without issue. But when the court-appointed officer opened the safety deposit box to retrieve the vintage pocket watch, they found something else tucked inside a hidden compartment at the base of the box.”
“What kind of something else?” I asked, sitting upright at my desk.
“Documents,” Rebecca said. “Not corporate documents, and not financial records. Personal letters, overseas identification cards, and a certified birth certificate.”
A cold prickle of intuition ran down my spine. “Whose birth certificate?”
“A child’s,” Rebecca said grimly. “Born four years ago in Zurich. The father’s name listed on the birth certificate is Ethan Miller. And the mother’s name is not you, and it’s not Vanessa Cole.”
Silence stretched across the phone line for several seconds. The betrayal I thought I had fully processed suddenly expanded, revealing layers beneath layers of deceit I had never even imagined. Ethan hadn’t just been unfaithful with Vanessa during my pregnancy; he had been running an entire parallel life long before we even conceived our sons.
“Is the document verified?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
“We’re verifying it right now with international registry channels,” Rebecca answered. “Furthermore, the financial statements attached to the hidden compartment show regular wire transfers from a secret offshore account—transfers that started three years into our marriage and continued right up until the day we froze his assets.”

I closed my eyes, a wave of cold anger washing over me, instantly burning away any lingering sympathy or residual grief. Ethan wasn't just a fraudster and an adulterer; he was a professional imposter who had treated my life, my trust, and my family’s name as nothing more than a convenient staging ground for his endless schemes.
“Rebecca,” I said softly, opening my eyes to stare firmly at the city skyline outside my window. “If there are undisclosed financial liabilities or children tied to foreign accounts that could affect my family or my sons in the future, I want every single detail brought to light. We are not letting him bury this.”
