Chapter 7 - THE COUNTERSTRIKE

A suffocating silence hung in the humid air of the tunnel. Andrew stood ten feet away, extending his hand, expecting me to collapse, to surrender, to break down under the weight of his threat as I had so many times before. But he didn't realize one crucial detail.

"You forgot about the bear, Andrew," I said, my voice steady, ringing clearly through the stone corridor.

Andrew frowned, his hand pausing mid-air. "What bear?"

"The stuffed teddy bear Evelyn gave Liam," I replied, a small, triumphant smile breaking through my tears. "The one with the glass eye. I told you I installed twenty-six hidden cameras in the house. But I didn't tell you where those cameras were broadcasting."

Evelyn’s face paled slightly. "What is she talking about?"

"I am a school teacher, Andrew, but my brother is a senior cloud systems architect," I said, taking a step forward, holding my sons tight. "I didn't store the footage on a local hard drive in your study where you could delete it. I set up a live cloud stream. Every single room in this house—including the hidden entrance behind the laundry room—has been broadcasting live to an encrypted off-site server for the last forty-eight hours."

Andrew’s arrogant smile faltered. His eyes darted nervously to the ceiling, searching for hidden lenses amidst the rusting pipes.

"And fifteen minutes ago," I continued, "when Nora told me about Noah, I used my phone in the nursery closet to hit 'Publish.' Right now, over forty news outlets, the Connecticut State Police, the FBI human trafficking division, and two million viewers on social media are watching this dark tunnel in real-time. They watched you talk about the private facility. They heard Evelyn admit to committing Noah's mother. And they see you standing there with a syringe."

Right on cue, distant sirens began to echo above ground—a chorus of blaring police cruisers, emergency vans, and helicopters cutting through the roaring thunderstorm outside. The vibrations shook the underground concrete walls, loosening flecks of dust from the ceiling.

Evelyn shrieked, clutching her pearls. "Andrew! What has she done?! Do something!"

"Shut up!" Andrew roared, his composure crumbling instantly into violent rage. He lunged forward, reaching for Liam. "Give me that baby!"

Before he could reach us, Nora swung the heavy brass candlestick with all her strength, striking Andrew square across the jaw. He went down with a sickening thud, crashing onto the wet concrete flooring, groaning in pain. The two security guards turned to run back up the stairs to save themselves, while Dr. Thorne dropped his medical bag and fled into the dark tunnel toward the ravine exit.
