Chapter 5 - THE FIRSTBORN SECRET

I pressed my face against the icy glass of the cell door. Inside, sitting on a thin mattress laid directly on the concrete floor, was a boy around three years old. He had big, round blue eyes—the exact shade of my own—and soft blonde curls hanging over his pale forehead. He was wearing an oversized gray jumpsuit, and beside him sat a worn, plush bear identical to the one Evelyn had given Liam at his baptism.
"Oh God..." I choked out, tears scalding my eyes. "Oh my God..."
The boy stood up on trembling legs, walking toward the door. He held his small hands against the glass. "Mommy?" he whispered, his voice cracked with dry hoarseness. "You came back? The bad man said you were dead."
"Nora, open this door!" I screamed in a hushed, desperate frenzy. "Open it right now!"
Nora whipped out a ring of stolen keys, her hands shaking violently as she tried one key after another in the heavy deadbolt. "I stole these from Andrew's study last night while he was on the phone with his lawyers," she muttered, trying key number three. Click. Key number four. Click. On the fifth try, the heavy iron latch turned with a loud metallic thud.
I threw the door open and fell to my knees. With Liam cradled in my left arm, I pulled the little boy into my right arm, squeezing him so hard I thought I’d never let go. He buried his face in my neck, sobbing softly. His skin was pale as alabaster, devoid of sunlight, but he smelled faintly of the same lavender baby soap I used on Liam.
"Who are you, baby?" I sobbed, kissing his hair, his cheeks, his forehead. "What is your name?"
"Noah," the little boy whimpered. "My name is Noah Whitmore. Am I good now? Can I go outside?"
Noah Whitmore. Three years ago, before I married Andrew, he had told me a tragic story about his past. He claimed he had been married briefly in his twenties to a woman who tragically died in a car crash, taking their unborn child with her. It had been a lie. A monstrous, calculated lie. Noah was Andrew's firstborn son. But why? Why hide a toddler in a subterranean dungeon?
"Because of the inheritance trust," Nora whispered, standing guard at the iron door, her eyes darting left and right down the corridor. "I read the documents in Andrew's desk while looking for the keys. The Whitmore family trust, worth over two hundred million dollars, is legally locked under an old grandfather clause. It stipulates that the primary heir must be born of a 'pure bloodline'—meaning both parents must belong to the original founding families of New England."

I gasped as the sickening puzzle pieces began falling into place. "I am not old money," I realized aloud. "I'm a public school teacher from Ohio. Andrew married me because..."
"Because his first wife was old money, but she discovered what he and Evelyn really were," Nora explained quickly. "When she tried to run away with Noah, Andrew framed her, had her committed, and faked her death. But Noah was born with a genetic heart defect—a flaw Evelyn considered 'imperfect.' They couldn't present an imperfect child as the sole heir to the Whitmore fortune. So they hid Noah down here, kept him alive as a spare, and hired you to produce a second, perfect child!"
