Chapter 8 - The Price of Justice

Three months later, the criminal proceedings came to a final, devastating conclusion.
The District Attorney offered no generous plea bargains. The evidence was too clear, the public outrage too intense, and the court’s mandate too explicit.
Madison Bennett entered a guilty plea to charges of felony child abuse, perjury, and filing a false police report. Given the intentional nature of the act and her complete lack of remorse until caught, the judge sentenced her to six years in state prison. I sat in the front row of the gallery with Arthur as they led her away in orange scrubs and handcuffs, her vanity and pride completely stripped away.
My father, Richard Bennett, pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy, attempted trust fraud, and obstruction of justice. His corporate empire was completely liquidated by federal bankruptcy trustees to pay off his massive debts. The judge sentenced him to four years in federal prison and ordered full restitution to Lily’s trust fund for the legal fees incurred.
My mother, Eleanor, received three years of intensive felony probation and five hundred hours of community service for her role in providing false statements to law enforcement, along with a permanent restraining order forbidding her from coming within one thousand yards of Lily or me.
As for my cousin Ben, who had taken the ultimate risk by sending me the video evidence, Arthur worked with the prosecutor to ensure he received full legal immunity for his cooperation. I personally paid off his remaining college tuition using a small, legal distribution from my own independent savings, ensuring his father's small subcontracting business survived the fallout of my father's corporate collapse.
On a bright, sunny afternoon in May, six months after that horrific night, I stood in the probate court room before a new judge.
"Ms. Claire Bennett," the probate judge said with a warm smile. "In light of recent events and the complete resolution of all legal matters, this court hereby approves the permanent modification of the Lily Bennett Master Trust. You are confirmed as the sole, unchallengeable trustee, with all secondary administrative rights previously held by Richard Bennett permanently revoked."
"Thank you, Your Honor," I said softly.
When we walked out of the courthouse into the crisp spring air, Arthur handed me a final folder of executed legal papers.
"It's over, Claire," Arthur said, adjusting his suit jacket. "Every legal tie binding you and Lily to your former family has been cleanly severed. You are completely free."
May you like
I shook Arthur's hand, holding back tears of profound relief. "I can never thank you enough, Arthur. You saved my daughter's life."
"You saved her, Claire," Arthur smiled softly. "You stood your ground when everyone tried to make you feel insane. Never forget that."
