Chapter 6 - The Falling of the Dominoes

The silence in Courtroom 402 was so thick it felt physical.

Judge Gomez stared at the black screen for three full seconds, her hands flat on the bench. When she slowly turned her gaze toward the witness stand, her face was no longer just stern—it was terrifyingly dark.

Madison had gone completely ghost-white. Her mouth hung open, her eyes darting frantically between the screen, her father, and the judge. The beige bandage on her cheek and the ridiculous neck brace now looked like the absurd props of a foolish criminal.

"Ms... Bennett," Judge Gomez said, her voice dropping an octave into a low, lethal register. "You just swore under oath, under penalty of perjury, that you were across the room and that your sister slammed that box lid."

"I... I..." Madison stammered, her voice squeaking as panic seized her throat. "Your Honor... it... it was a mistake! The angle of the video is misleading! I was trying to close the box so she wouldn't hurt herself!"

"Silence!" Judge Gomez slammed her gavel down with a resounding crack that made everyone in the gallery jump. "Do not speak another word in this courtroom!"

Judge Gomez turned her blazing eyes toward the state’s attorney and Marcus Vance. "CPS Counsel! Mr. Vance! Explain to me immediately how an emergency removal order was issued based on this fraudulent, fabricated report!"

The state’s attorney stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. He turned around and glared at Vance with pure fury. "Your Honor, the Department was completely deceived by the reporting parties! The initial report filed by Mr. Richard Bennett and Ms. Madison Bennett included sworn police affidavits claiming domestic violence by the mother. Based on this video... the Department immediately withdraws its petition for custody!"

"You're damn right you withdraw it!" Judge Gomez snapped. "I am ordering the immediate, unconditional release of Lily Bennett into the exclusive physical and legal custody of her mother, Claire Bennett, effective this second!"

Tears burst from my eyes, a massive weight lifting off my chest as Arthur grabbed my hand and gave it a firm, victorious squeeze.

"Furthermore," Judge Gomez continued, leaning forward over her bench, "I am ordering the Sheriff's deputies in this courtroom to immediately place Madison Bennett into custody for aggravated child abuse, filing a false police report, and felony perjury in open court!"

Two armed bailiffs immediately stepped toward the witness stand.

"Dad! Dad, do something!" Madison screamed, breaking into hysterical sobs as the deputies grabbed her arms and yanked her out of the witness box. "Dad! Help me!"

Richard Bennett stood up in the gallery, his face red with rage and humiliation. "Your Honor, this is an outrage! My daughter made a mistake, but—"

"Sit down, sir, or I will have you locked in a cell for contempt of court right now!" Judge Gomez shouted, pointing her gavel directly at my father. "Deputy, secure Mr. Richard Bennett and Mrs. Eleanor Bennett! State's Attorney, I want a full criminal investigation opened immediately into Richard and Eleanor Bennett for conspiracy to commit child abuse, filing false official statements, and obstruction of justice!"

"We will open the file today, Your Honor," the state’s attorney confirmed without hesitation, eager to distance himself from the disaster.

My mother began weeping loudly in the gallery as deputies escorted Madison out through the side door in handcuffs. Madison was sobbing hysterically, her neck brace askew, her fake narrative completely demolished before the entire court.

"Ms. Claire Bennett," Judge Gomez said, her tone softening dramatically as she looked down at me. "I offer you the deepest apologies of this court for the trauma inflicted upon you and your daughter by these despicable actions. An emergency transport order is signed. A police escort will take you directly to the child shelter right now so you can bring your daughter home."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I sobbed, wiping my eyes. "Thank you."

As I gathered my coat, my father tried to approach me near the railing, guarded by a deputy. His polished executive demeanor was entirely shattered; he looked desperate, old, and defeated.

"Claire," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Claire, please... don't do this. Think of the family name. If this goes to the press, the company will go bankrupt. We can settle this privately. I'll pay for Lily's medical bills, I'll pay you whatever you want—"

I stopped, turning to look my father in the eye for the first time in three days.

May you like

"You didn't care about Lily's pain," I said, my voice completely devoid of hatred, leaving only absolute disdain. "You only cared about her money. You used your own granddaughter as collateral for your failing business. You're not my father anymore, Richard. You're just a criminal waiting for trial."

I turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom with Arthur.
