Chapter 10 - The Bright Horizon

As the sun began to sink below the horizon, painting the Columbus sky in brilliant brushstrokes of amber, violet, and gold, we sat together around the wooden dining table.

Lily sat between her father and me, chattering animatedly about her school art project—a bright, sprawling painting of a large, sturdy bridge spanning a wide, glittering river, with a bright yellow sun shining overhead.

“Look, Grandpa,” she said proudly, holding up her sketchbook for me to see. “I drew the bridge so strong that nothing can ever break it down. Not even a big storm.”

I looked at the drawing, then looked at my son, and finally at my granddaughter. The lines were straight, the colors were vibrant, and the foundation was solid enough to withstand anything the world could throw at it.

“That’s the best bridge I’ve ever seen, kiddo,” I said, raising my glass of fresh apple juice in a toast. “To strong foundations.”

“To strong foundations,” Mark echoed, smiling as he clinked his glass against mine.

“And to happy endings!” Lily added cheerfully, tapping her cup against both of ours with a clear, ringing sound that filled the room with warmth and light.

We all drank together, smiling in the quiet comfort of a home that was finally, truly safe. Outside, the evening wind whispered through the trees, carrying the sweet promise of tomorrow—a tomorrow built on truth, protection, and an unbreakable family bond that nothing could ever shake again.
