PART 3: The Midnight Discovery

David walked into the kitchen, loosening his silk tie as he went. His expression was relaxed, almost cheerful, the picture of a man returning home from a hard day's work to his loving family. He leaned against the doorframe, watching me with those clear, deceptive eyes.

"Everything okay, sweetie? You look a little pale," he asked, tilting his head with a flicker of genuine curiosity—or perhaps, calculation.

"I'm fine, David. Just a headache," I said, keeping my back turned as I rinsed a clean glass under the faucet, letting the rushing water drown out the sound of my ragged breathing. "Long day with Mia."

"You should take an aspirin and go lie down. I can order takeout tonight," he offered, stepping closer and resting a warm hand on the small of my back.

Every instinct in my body screamed to recoil, to tear away from his touch as if I had been branded by a hot iron. But years of survival instinct—the same instinct that taught me to appease volatile situations in my youth—took over. I leaned into him slightly, playing the dutiful, unsuspecting wife.

"That sounds wonderful," I whispered. "Thank you."

That night, sleep was a foreign country. While David lay beside me in the king-sized bed, breathing slowly and deeply in the rhythm of the innocent, my mind raced through the digital labyrinth I had glimpsed. Who was the woman in the video? Why did he need an encrypted laptop? And most terrifyingly, why did he use our daughter's fingerprint to unlock his primary phone? Was it a sick psychological game, or was Mia somehow more deeply entangled in his secrets than I dared to imagine?

By 3:00 AM, I couldn't bear the suffocating weight of the dark room anymore. I slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb the sheets, and crept down the hallway to the home office. I didn't turn on the lights. The pale moonlight filtering through the window was enough to guide my hands.

I opened the desk drawer, pulled out the silver laptop once more, and booted it up using the same numeric password. This time, instead of the video folders, I navigated to the financial records. What I found made my blood run cold.

The transfers weren't just going to a mysterious bank account. They were flowing out of our joint savings and into an offshore trust fund—a trust fund registered under a name I didn't recognize, but with a secondary beneficiary listed as Mia Rose Vance. But underneath Mia’s name, there was a legal clause: Upon the total incapacity, disappearance, or legal forfeiture of rights of the primary guardian, Elena Vance.

He wasn't just cheating on me. He was setting up a legal framework to strip me of my child.

The room began to spin. The walls of the cozy study seemed to cave inward, pressing down on my chest until every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass. He was planning an exit strategy, and he had been engineering it since the day Mia was born. The fingerprint lock on his phone wasn't a clever safety measure; it was a digital anchor, ensuring that our daughter’s biometric data was perpetually tied to his private empire, ready to be used as a weapon against me when the time was right.
