PART 2: The Digital Vault

The metal handle of the bottom desk drawer was cold under my fingertips. For three years, I had respected the boundaries of our marriage, believing that privacy was the cornerstone of intimacy. Now, as the drawer slid open with a soft, oiled whisper, I realized privacy was just another word for secrecy. Inside sat a heavy, silver laptop, resting quietly beneath a stack of old architecture portfolios.
I pulled it out, carrying it over to the kitchen island where the shadows hid my movements from the living room. The screen was black. I pressed the power button, holding my breath as the Apple logo blinked to life, cutting through the dimness of the evening light. A login prompt appeared. Password protected.
I stared at the blinking cursor. What would a man like David use? Our anniversary? Mia’s birthday? My mother’s name? I tried our wedding date—091418. Incorrect. I tried Mia's birthday—052123. Incorrect. A chill ran down my spine. The password wasn't tied to our family milestones at all. It was something clinical, something cold.
Then, I remembered the bank notification on my phone. The series of numbers. I typed them in slowly, one by one. 4-8-9-2-0-1.
The screen flickered. The desktop loaded.
My breath caught in my throat. There were no architectural blueprints here. No corporate spreadsheets. The desktop was covered in folders, each labeled with dates stretching back four years—a year before we were even married. I clicked on the most recent folder. It contained hundreds of encrypted audio files and video clips. I clicked on a video dated from last Tuesday, a day David claimed he was working late at the downtown office.
The video opened to a dimly lit room I had never seen before. A sleek, modern apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. And there was David—not behind a corporate desk, but pouring champagne into two crystal flutes. A woman walked into the frame, her face obscured by the angle of the camera, and wrapped her arms around his neck from behind. He turned, laughing that same charming, intoxicating laugh, and kissed her deeply.
My stomach violently heaved. I slapped a hand over my mouth to stifle a sob, tears blurring the screen into a wash of blue and white light. He wasn't just having an affair. He had built an entirely separate life, complete with an apartment, routine, and intimacy that rivaled our own.
"Elena?"
May you like
David’s voice rang out from the hallway, breaking through the audio of the video. The suddenness of it shattered my composure. Panic, sharp and electric, surged through my veins.
"Coming!" I choked out, my fingers flying across the trackpad. I hit eject on the cloud backup sync, closed the laptop lid, and shoved it back into the drawer just as the footsteps grew louder. I spun around, grabbing a dish towel and pretending to wipe down the spotless counter, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird.
