Chapter 9 - The First Year

Leo’s first birthday party was a modest, joyous affair held in our sunlit backyard on a warm Saturday in August—exactly one year after the terrifying night that had nearly cost us everything.

We invited Megan and her husband, along with a few close friends from the neighborhood and our local parent support network. There were no grand halls, no forced obligations, and absolutely no toxic family members lurking in the periphery. Just good food, bright laughter, and the sound of children running across the grass.

Emma had baked a magnificent, lopsided smash cake covered in blue frosting, which Leo immediately attacked with both fists, smearing frosting from cheek to ear while everyone cheered.

As I watched Emma laugh, her eyes bright and carefree as she wiped blue frosting off our son's nose, a wave of profound gratitude washed over me. We had weathered the absolute worst life could throw at a young family, and we had come out the other side stronger, wiser, and more deeply in love than ever before.

Later that evening, after the guests had gone and Leo had finally drifted off to sleep in his crib, Emma and I sat out on the back patio. The night air was warm and still, filled with the gentle hum of crickets and the soft glow of string lights we had hung along the fence.

Emma leaned her head on my shoulder, sipping a glass of iced lemonade.

“Can you believe it’s been a whole year?” she whispered into the quiet night.

“It feels like both the longest and shortest year of my life,” I replied, wrapping my arm securely around her waist. “We survived the storm, Em.”

“We did,” she agreed, turning her face to kiss my cheek. “And we built a sanctuary.”

We sat together in comfortable silence, watching the stars twinkling overhead, knowing that no matter what challenges the future might hold, our home was safe, our love was unbreakable, and our family was truly whole.
