Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead
Five years later, the nursery had been transformed into a bright, colorful big-kid room filled with dinosaur posters, toy bins, and towering stacks of picture books.
Leo was six years old now—a bright, energetic kindergartener with a quick laugh and an insatiable curiosity about the world. He was fiercely protected by his younger sister, Maya, a spirited three-year-old with Emma’s expressive eyes and a laugh that could light up an entire room.
On a crisp, golden Saturday morning in autumn, our family of four piled into the car to drive out to the local pumpkin patch—a yearly family tradition we had started the fall after Leo turned one.
The pumpkin patch was bustling with families, laughter, and the rich, earthy scent of hay and autumn leaves. Maya rode excitedly on my shoulders, her tiny hands clutching my hair for balance, while Leo ran ahead with Emma, searching for the biggest pumpkin they could find.
I watched them from a few yards back—Emma laughing as Leo pointed excitedly at a giant, lumpy orange pumpkin resting near a stack of hay bales. The sunlight caught the golden highlights in her hair, and her smile was radiant, entirely untouched by the shadows of the past.
My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a work email.
Instead, it was a notification from a local real estate app alerting me that a property listing in our old neighborhood had sold. I didn't click on it. I simply archived the notification, turned off my screen, and slipped the phone back into my pocket.
That chapter of our lives wasn't just closed; it belonged to a completely different lifetime.
“Caleb! Hurry up! We found the spaceship pumpkin!” Leo shouted, waving his small hands frantically in the air.
