Chapter 5 - The Dinner of Reckoning

The dining room chandelier cast a brilliant, cold light over the long mahogany table. Outside, a heavy tropical rain beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere inside the house.

Vanessa’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tran, sat near the head of the table looking thoroughly confused and slightly uneasy. They were wealthy socialites who had always looked down on my humble background, frequently reminding Vanessa that she had married "beneath her."

Vanessa sat near the end of the table, her eyes red-rimmed, her face pale beneath heavy makeup. She had spent the entire afternoon begging me to cancel the dinner, but I had refused.

My mother sat quietly at the opposite end, wearing a clean, elegant silk tunic I had bought her in New York. She looked dignified, calm, and entirely at peace.

“Minh, darling,” Mrs. Tran said, forcing an awkward smile as she sipped her wine. “Vanessa tells us there’s been some misunderstanding about family finances. And she mentioned something about security footage? Really, isn't this all rather melodramatic for a simple domestic disagreement?”

“A domestic disagreement, Mrs. Tran?” I asked calmly, taking a slow sip of water. “Let’s define our terms.”

I reached into my pocket and placed a sleek black remote on the center of the table. With a single click, the large smart TV mounted on the dining room wall lit up.

The screen displayed the title screen of the cloud security archive: Surveillance Log: Residential Property - 18 Months Review.

Vanessa leaped up from her chair, screaming, “No! Don’t play that! Minh, stop it! Stop it right now!”

“Sit down, Vanessa,” I said. The tone in my voice was so absolute, so heavy with authority, that Mr. Tran instinctively grabbed his daughter’s wrist and forced her back into her seat.

“Let’s watch,” I said, and pressed play.

The living room camera footage began to roll. The high-definition audio filled the silent dining room with crystal clarity.

On screen, Vanessa’s voice echoed: “Faster. Don’t act old in my house.”

The room froze. Mr. and Mrs. Tran stared at the screen in horrified disbelief as clip after clip played. They watched their daughter ripping away my mother’s blanket on a freezing winter night. They watched her screaming insults, throwing food into the trash, and forcefully ripping the pension card from my mother’s frail hands while my mother wept silently.

Mrs. Tran covered her mouth with both hands, gasping for air. Mr. Tran turned an angry, crimson shade, staring at his daughter with utter disgust.

“Vanessa…” Mr. Tran choked out, his voice trembling with shame. “Is this… is this how you behaved? You treated an elderly woman—your own mother-in-law—like a slave in her own home?”

“They’re fake! They’re edited!” Vanessa shrieked, bursting into hysterical tears as she pointed frantically at the screen. “Minh used AI! He’s trying to frame me because he wants a divorce!”

“Attorney Vu,” I called out.

From the shadows near the double doors, my lawyer stepped forward, holding a thick legal dossier. He placed copies of the digital verification certificate, the independent IT forensic report confirming the footage was authentic and unedited, and the official bank fraud audit on the table in front of Mr. Tran.

“The files are cryptographically signed and verified by a licensed third-party cyber forensics firm,” Attorney Vu stated professionally. “Furthermore, the financial audit confirms that over eighteen months, precisely four hundred and twenty million local currency was unlawfully siphoned from Mrs. Nguyen’s personal pension account into Vanessa’s private secondary accounts.”

Mr. Tran looked at the forensic report, then at his daughter. Without a word, he raised his hand and delivered a sharp, echoing slap across Vanessa’s face.

The crack of the slap silenced the entire room. Vanessa slumped back in her chair, clutching her cheek, sobbing uncontrollably as her social facade utterly disintegrated.
