Chapter 2 - Gathering the Proof

The night after my return was quiet, but sleep eluded me. While Vanessa slept soundly beside me—her breathing deep and unburdened by guilt—I sat in my home office with the laptop open, streaming data directly from the high-resolution smart home cameras I had installed eighteen months prior.
I entered the administrator credentials. The system interface loaded instantly, displaying a timeline of motion-activated clips stored securely on an encrypted overseas cloud server. I began downloading footage from the living room, the kitchen, and the hallway.
The screen flickered to life. I watched in grim silence as month after month of my mother's life unfolded in fast-forward. I saw Vanessa throwing away homemade medicine, replacing it with cheap, generic vitamins. I saw Vanessa tossing my mother’s favorite porcelain teacup onto the tile because it was "taking up counter space." I watched Vanessa mock my mother's quiet weeping, telling her that her son had abandoned her in America because he was ashamed of her rural background.
Each clip was timestamped, clear, and damning. I saved every file into a folder labeled simply: Evidence.
By 4:00 AM, I had compiled a comprehensive digital archive covering eighteen months of systematic psychological and physical abuse. My jaw ached from clenching my teeth. In the old days, I might have lost my temper, thrown punches, or caused a scene that would have given Vanessa the moral high ground in a court of law. But business in the corporate logistics world had taught me a fundamental truth: emotion is a liability, while preparation is absolute power.
I closed the laptop and walked to the window. The pale gray light of dawn was breaking over the suburban rooftops. My mother’s bedroom was just down the hall. I knew she was awake; I could hear the faint, rhythmic rustle of her prayer beads.
I needed to secure her financial autonomy first. Vanessa had confiscated her pension card, but government records and bank statements linked directly to my mother’s digital ID could be frozen and reissued with a single phone call to my private banking contacts.
At 8:00 AM, Vanessa came downstairs in a silk robe, humming cheerfully. She poured herself a cup of coffee and leaned against the kitchen island, looking at me with an expression of calculated domestic sweetness.
“Good morning, darling,” Vanessa said, stretching her arms. “So, are you going to look for a job today, or are we going to spend the day sorting out your career disaster in the US?”
I looked up from my tablet, sipping my black coffee. “My career disaster?”
“Well, let’s be honest,” she said with a patronizing chuckle, taking a sip of her latte. “You spent a year and a half abroad, and you came back with a single suitcase and no luxury car. Everyone knows the American market chewed you up and spat you out. Don't worry, I won't rub it in. But things are tight. You'll need to contribute.”
“Tight?” I repeated, raising an eyebrow. “Is that why my mother’s pension card has been missing for over a year?”
Vanessa’s coffee cup froze halfway to her lips. A flicker of panic crossed her face, but she recovered quickly, her eyes narrowing into a defensive glare.
“Oh, please,” she scoffed, crossing her arms. “Your mother is senile. She misplaces everything, and then she blames me. If you’re going to start believing an old woman’s rambling delusions on your very first day back, our marriage is in serious trouble.”
She thought she could gaslight me. She thought I was still the naive man who had left her behind to chase a dream.

“You’re right, Vanessa,” I said softly, standing up from the table. “Our marriage is in serious trouble. But perhaps not for the reasons you think.”
I walked past her toward the front door, leaving her standing in the kitchen with a furrowed brow, entirely unaware that the trap was already closing around her.
