Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Past
Over the next forty-eight hours, Michael threw himself into building an unassailable case. He knew that Sarah was an expert manipulator who had spent years crafting a public image of perfection. To defeat her, he needed evidence that transcended his word against hers.
Michael hired David Vance (no relation to Sarah's lawyer), a renowned family law attorney specializing in complex child abuse and custody defense, along with Karen Miller, a private investigator with a background in forensic psychology.
While Emma remained safely in the hospital receiving therapy and pediatric care, Karen Miller began digging into Sarah’s past—and what she uncovered was staggering.
Sarah had been employed at two other high schools in adjacent school districts prior to her current position. At both previous schools, she had resigned abruptly mid-semester. When Karen interviewed former colleagues off the record, a horrifying pattern emerged.
At her previous employment four years ago, Sarah had been the subject of an internal human resources investigation after a student accused her of severe psychological harassment and retaliatory grading. The school district, eager to avoid a public scandal, had allowed Sarah to resign quietly with a non-disclosure agreement and a neutral reference.
Even more shocking was a discovery from Sarah’s college years. Michael learned that Sarah’s own mother had been institutionalized for severe borderline personality disorder with severe narcissism and violent outbursts. Sarah had grown up in an environment of extreme emotional covert abuse, and rather than healing, she had adopted the exact same abusive patterns, concealing them behind a facade of perfectionism.
Meanwhile, Michael began auditing the smart-home security systems in their apartment. While Sarah had routinely disabled the indoor hallway camera claiming it violated her privacy, Michael discovered that the digital backup logs stored raw audio clips on an encrypted cloud drive he had configured years ago and forgotten about.
Sitting in his attorney’s office, Michael plugged in his laptop and played the audio files from the past three months.

The speakers echoed with Sarah’s cold, screaming voice, followed by the terrifying sounds of slaps, thuds, and Emma’s desperate, muffled sobbing: "If you tell your father, he won't love you anymore! He stays away from home because of you!" "You're useless! Do you want me to send you away?"
David Vance, the attorney, sat back in his chair, his eyes dark with grim satisfaction. "Michael, this isn't just evidence for a custody battle. This is ironclad evidence for criminal child abuse charges. Sarah isn't going to get custody. She is going to prison."
