Chapter 5 - Protective Orders and Twisted Allegations

At 6:00 AM, the morning light broke over the city, casting pale gray shadows across Emma’s hospital room. Michael had not slept a single minute. Detective Raymond Burke from the Family Protection Unit had arrived at dawn to take Michael’s formal statement and photographs of Emma’s injuries.

Suddenly, the silence of the hospital corridor was broken by the sound of hurried footsteps and loud raised voices. Michael stepped out into the hallway to find two police officers blocking Sarah from advancing down the corridor.

Sarah was accompanied by a stern, sharp-suited man carrying a leather briefcase—her high-powered family law attorney, Arthur Vance.

"I am her mother!" Sarah shouted, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. "You have no legal right to withhold my daughter from me! My husband stole her from our apartment in the middle of the night without my consent!"

"Mrs. Hayes, please lower your voice," Detective Burke said sternly, stepping forward. "There is a mandatory child safety hold active on Emma Hayes based on physical evidence of child abuse."

Arthur Vance, Sarah’s attorney, immediately stepped into the light with a cold, calculated smile. "Detective, my client is a respected public school counselor with an unblemished record. What we have here is a malicious setup. Mr. Michael Hayes is frequently absent from home due to his relentless travel schedule. My client was disciplining a rebellious child who threw a violent temper tantrum. Mr. Hayes, in an attempt to gain leverage in a pending divorce, is exaggerating minor domestic incidents to frame my client."

Michael felt his blood run cold. The sheer audacity of the lie was breathtaking. "She threw her against a door handle, Vance! She has healing rib fractures!"

"Which could have easily occurred under your care during your unmonitored weekend outings, Mr. Hayes," Vance replied smoothly, without missing a beat. "We have already filed an emergency petition for sole temporary custody, alleging parental alienation and emotional instability on your part."

Sarah looked at Michael with a triumphant smirk behind her attorney’s shoulder. She truly believed that her professional reputation, her social standing, and her legal maneuvering would insulate her from consequences.

"You are sick, Sarah," Michael said quietly, stepping close enough for only her to hear. "You think you can manipulate a courtroom the way you manipulate an eight-year-old child. But I promise you, you will never touch her again."

Detective Burke served Sarah with an immediate Ex Parte Emergency Protective Order issued by the magistrate court, prohibiting her from coming within 500 feet of Emma or Michael pending an emergency custody hearing scheduled in 72 hours.

As Sarah was escorted out of the hospital building by security, she turned back and hissed, "You think you won, Michael? You have no idea what I am capable of. I will take everything from you."
