Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The blue light from the LED screen cast long, sharp shadows across the faces of the elderly board members. Whispers immediately broke out around the mahogany table.
Mr. Henderson, sitting quietly in the corner as the meeting secretary, turned pale as a sheet as he read the first data point projected behind my mother.
“What is the meaning of this insolence?” Victoria demanded, rising from her high-backed leather chair with surprising agility for her age. Her voice was laced with ice, but a faint tremor betrayed her composure. “You dare project internal corporate drafts onto the executive screen without board clearance? Turn that off immediately, Daniel, or security will escort you out in handcuffs.”
“Sit down, Mother,” I said, my voice entirely devoid of emotion. It wasn’t a request; it was an order backed by absolute legal leverage.
I clicked the remote, advancing the slide to show the authenticated wire transfers linking the Vance Industries corporate reserves directly to Lark Consulting and Meridian Wellness—and finally, to her personal offshore trust account in the Caymans.
“For the past six months,” I stated clearly, pacing slowly along the edge of the glass table so every board member could see my face, “six hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars has been systematically siphoned from our operational accounts under the guise of consulting fees. Consulting services that were never rendered. Projects that do not exist.”
Old Mr. Sterling, the senior legal counsel who had represented my father since the company’s inception, adjusted his glasses and leaned forward, squinting at the ledger entries.
“Good Lord,” Sterling muttered, his finger tracing a line on his printed tablet. “Victoria... these authorization stamps bear your primary administrative seal. And the counter-signature... is registered under Lucas’s internal API token.”
Victoria slammed her palm against the glass table, making the water glasses rattle. “Absolute fabrications! Daniel is experiencing a mental breakdown because his wife has manipulated him into turning against his own flesh and blood. He manufactured these digital entries to smear my name and protect his gold-digging wife from accountability!”
“Is that so?” I raised an eyebrow, pulling my smartphone from my pocket and tapping the screen twice.
Through the premium audio speakers integrated into the boardroom ceiling, an audio recording began to play. The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.
“Scrub harder,” my mother’s voice rang out clearly through the speakers, echoing off the mahogany walls. “This house belongs to my children, not you... You own nothing without me. The company, the house, the accounts—everything came from your father.”
As the audio continued—capturing the sound of Elena’s soft weeping and Lucas’s mocking laughter as he filmed her humiliation—Victoria’s face lost every trace of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The board members looked away from her in absolute disgust. In the corporate world, ruthlessness was sometimes tolerated; public scandal, liability, and domestic abuse caught on tape were corporate suicide.
“That recording,” Mr. Sterling said quietly, his voice trembling with disappointment, “constitutes severe workplace harassment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and potential criminal extortion if tied to the financial diversion. Victoria... you have compromised the integrity of Vance Industries.”
“I call for an immediate vote,” I said, stepping right up to the head of the table, looking down at the woman who had spent my entire life trying to cage me. “Article Twelve of the corporate charter states that any executive officer found guilty of misappropriating company assets or bringing severe legal and moral disgrace upon the firm is subject to immediate removal of voting rights and suspension of administrative control.”
I looked around the table, catching the eye of every single board member. One by one, they nodded.
“All in favor?” Sterling asked, raising his hand high.

Four hands went up instantly.
Victoria collapsed back into her chair, her fingers clawing weakly at the velvet armrests. Her empire was crumbling, and she had built the wrecking ball herself.
