Chapter 10 - A New Foundation

Six months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the gardens of the Lake Forest estate.

Elena’s battle had been hard, but with the best medical care money could buy, her cancer had gone into partial remission. She wasn't completely cured, but she was out of bed, her face full of color, sitting in a lawn chair watching the grass sway in the gentle breeze.

Old Salvatore Russo had passed away peacefully in his sleep two months prior, but not before he spent a beautiful afternoon in this very garden, holding his granddaughter Sophie and shedding tears of genuine repentance. He left his legitimate wealth to a trust fund for Sophie, handled entirely by an independent board.

I walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of lemonade. Sophie was running across the lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted a few weeks ago.

She was wearing a beautiful white sundress, and on her feet were a pair of pristine, light-up sneakers. They weren't $45 anymore—they were top-of-the-line—but she still took them off before she stepped onto the patio bricks, lining them up neatly by the door.

"Look, Daddy!" she shouted, pointing at a butterfly landing on a rosebush. "It's staying still for us!"

I smiled, setting the tray down and wrapping my arm around Elena’s shoulders. Elena leaned her head against my chest, her hand resting over mine.

"You saved us, Michael," she whispered softly.

"No," I replied, kissing the top of her head as we watched our daughter laugh in the sunlight. "A little girl in a hospital room with a pair of cheap school shoes saved me. She showed me what I was actually fighting for."

The Harrison empire was no longer just a collection of buildings, ships, and balance sheets. It was a home. A sanctuary built on a truth that no mob, no corporate greed, and no betrayal could ever tear down again.
