Chapter 8 - The Grand Paleontology Gala

Two months later, as summer was winding down, Leo’s school held its annual Science and Cultural Fair—a massive event attended by hundreds of students, parents, and local community members.

Leo had spent four weeks preparing his entry for the 4th-grade science competition.

With Sarah helping him write his presentation boards and me helping him build a custom wooden display case, Leo created a comprehensive exhibit titled: The Apex Predators of the Late Cretaceous: A Field Study of Tooth Morphology.

At the center of his display, resting under a velvet cushion inside a glass case, was the authentic fossil predator tooth he had personally excavated in western Nebraska. Beside it were high-resolution photographs of him, Sarah, and me working together at the dig site, alongside Dr. Alan's certified letter of authenticity.

The gym was bustling with noise, filled with project boards, volcano models, and robot demonstrations.

When the judges—a panel of high school science teachers and a guest professor from the University of Nebraska—reached Leo’s booth, he didn't stammer or look shy. He stood tall in his green explorer shirt, wearing his field belt proudly.

"Good afternoon, judges," Leo began, his voice clear, confident, and bright. "My name is Leo Vance, Chief Paleontologist of today's field presentation. Today, I'm going to show you how tooth structure reveals the hunting patterns of Cretaceous carnivores..."

Sarah and I stood at the back of the aisle, holding hands, watching him speak.

He spoke with authority, precision, and infectious enthusiasm. He named complex dinosaur species effortlessly, explained the process of fossilization, and answered the professor's technical questions with sharp clarity.

An hour later, the principal walked up to the microphone on the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, students and parents," the principal announced over the loudspeaker. "This year's Grand Prize for Exceptional Scientific Field Research goes to... Leo Vance!"

The gym erupted into applause.

Leo’s face lit up with a blinding smile. He looked directly through the crowd, finding Sarah and me immediately. He didn't run to the stage first; he ran straight to us, throwing his arms around both of our waists in a massive group hug.

"We did it, Dad! We did it, Mom!" he cheered.

"You did it, buddy," I smiled, lifting him up into my arms. "You earned every bit of it."

As Leo walked up to the stage to receive his blue ribbon and trophy, Sarah leaned in close to me, holding my arm tightly.

"Remember when he asked you if he did something wrong because they took his name away?" Sarah whispered, wiping a tear from her eye.

May you like

"I remember," I said softly.

"Look at him now," she said proudly. "Nobody can ever take his name away again."
