Chapter 6 - The Real Expedition

Three weeks after the court hearing, on a crisp sunny Saturday morning, I woke Leo up at 6:00 AM.
"Dad? What's going on?" he asked, rubbing his sleepy eyes as I turned on his bedroom light. "Why are we up so early?"
"Pack your boots, explorer," I grinned, tossing him a brand-new tan utility vest with deep pockets. "Your paleontology team is waiting."
Leo’s eyes snapped wide open. "Wait... real boots? Where are we going?"
"You'll see."
When we walked out to the SUV, Leo stopped in surprise. Sitting in the front passenger seat was Sarah, dressed in hiking pants and a sun hat, holding three thermal coffee mugs and a large map.
"Mom?!" Leo gasped. "You're coming too?"
"Of course I am," Sarah laughed, opening the back door for him. "You don't think a lead paleontologist can go on an expedition without his legal team and logistics chief, do you?"
Leo let out a joyful squeal and jumped into the back seat.
I had spent the last three weeks planning something far better than a simple rented party room with plastic decorations. Using the first restitution payment from Brenda, combined with a generous bonus I received at work for closing a major corporate audit, I had booked a private, guided fossil-digging tour at the famous Ashfall Fossil Beds and a private paleontology workshop in western Nebraska.
The drive was filled with music, laughter, and endless dinosaur trivia. For the first time in months, the heavy weight that had rested on our family felt completely lifted.
When we arrived at the research site, the lead paleontologist—a friendly, bearded scientist named Dr. Alan—was waiting for us at the entrance.
"Ah! You must be Chief Paleontologist Leo!" Dr. Alan greeted him, shaking Leo's hand with great formality. "We've been expecting you. The lab told me we have an uncharted dig site that needs an expert eye."
Leo’s mouth hung open in absolute awe.
Dr. Alan handed Leo a real leather tool belt complete with professional rock hammers, fine brushes, magnifying glasses, and a personalized field journal stamped with bold gold letters: LEO’S PALEONTOLOGY EXPEDITION: CHIEF FIELD DIRECTOR.
There were no pink balloons. No tiaras. No pop music playing over speakers.
Instead, there was the vast, majestic beauty of the natural world, the cool earth, and the thrilling promise of real discovery.
For four hours, Leo sat in the soft sediment alongside Dr. Alan, Sarah, and me. Dr. Alan showed him how to carefully brush away centuries-old dirt, expose prehistoric bone fragments, and catalog findings in his official notebook.
"Dad! Look!" Leo suddenly shouted, his voice echoing across the open dig site. "Look at this structure! It's serrated!"
Dr. Alan leaned in close, examining the small, dark fossil Leo had uncovered with his brush. The scientist's eyes lit up with genuine surprise.
"Well, look at that," Dr. Alan said in amazement. "Leo, you just uncovered a genuine, perfectly preserved fossil tooth from a prehistoric apex predator! This is a field-grade find!"
Leo looked up at me, his face glowing with pure, unadulterated pride. The shadow of the stolen birthday, the humiliation at the party hall, the lingering self-doubt—all of it melted away in that single, triumphant moment under the open sky.
"Mom! Dad! Look what I found!" he cheered, holding the small fossil up like a championship trophy.
Sarah sat beside me, her hand gently brushing against mine as we watched Leo bounce with joy. She looked over at me, her eyes glistening with happy tears.
"Look at him, Marcus," she whispered softly. "He's glowing."

"He deserves the world," I replied gently.
Sarah leaned her head briefly against my shoulder, her fingers intertwining with mine. "You gave him something better than a party hall, Marcus. You gave him a memory he'll keep for the rest of his life."
