Chapter 5 - The War at the Gates

By the third month of Ellen’s isolation, the Chicago underworld exploded into open warfare. The rival Falcone family, recognizing that Marco was no longer attending syndicate meetings or enforcing discipline, launched a coordinated strike against his businesses.

Three of Marco’s restaurants were firebombed in a single night. His shipping warehouses were raided by federal authorities acting on tips from anonymous informants within his own ranks. The empire was bleeding out, its territory shrinking by the day.

Dominic confronted Marco at a hidden safehouse on the outskirts of the city. "Marco, you have to come back. The men are talking about mutiny. Sal Falcone is openly boasting that he’s going to take your crown by the end of the month. We need to hit back. Hard."

Marco was cleaning a vintage revolver, his movements mechanical, his mind miles away at the lakeside cottage. "Let Sal boast."

"Are you insane?!" Dominic shouted, losing his temper for the first time in ten years. "Everything we built! Everything your father built! You’re letting it burn for a woman who won't even look at you!"

Marco slammed the revolver onto the wooden table, the crack echoing like a gunshot. His eyes flashed with a terrifying, ancient fire that made Dominic instinctively step back.

"You think this empire is my life, Dominic?" Marco whispered, his voice vibrating with raw venom. "I built this empire so no one could ever hurt the people I love. I thought power was a shield. But I used that shield to crush my wife. I let the poison of this life crawl into her kitchen. If this empire has to burn to ground so that the ash covers my sins, then let it burn to the bedrock."

That night, Sal Falcone sent a hit squad to Marco’s downtown headquarters. Anticipating the attack, Marco met them himself, not with an army, but with a calculated, devastating trap. He ambushed the squad in the underground parking garage, executing the operation with the cold efficiency of a man who had nothing left to lose.

When the smoke cleared, Marco stood over the wounded leader of the squad. He didn't finish him. Instead, he dropped his weapon onto the concrete.

"Tell Sal he can have the city," Marco said, wiping a streak of soot from his jaw. "The contracts, the unions, the docks—it's all his. But tell him if a single one of his men breathes the air near Lake Michigan, I won't just kill him. I will tear his world apart piece by piece until nothing remains but dust."
