Chapter 3 - The First Cracks in the Empire

By the third day, the underworld began to notice the absence of its king. Marco had moved his base of operations to a nondescript black SUV parked permanently across from the clinic. He showered in a nearby gym, ate sparingly, and conducted what little business he couldn't avoid through a single, trusted underboss, Dominic.
"Marco, we have a situation," Dominic said, stepping into the back seat of the SUV, his face grim. "The syndicate in the North Side is pushing into our docks. They know you're not at the table. They think you've gone soft because of the wife."
Marco didn't look at Dominic. His eyes were fixed on the third-floor window of the clinic where Ellen was being kept. "Let them take the docks."
Dominic gasped, utterly bewildered. "Let them? Marco, that's three million a month in revenue. If we don't retaliate, it shows weakness. The other families will circle like sharks."
"Let them circle," Marco replied, his voice deadly quiet, devoid of its usual aggressive fire. "If a single one of those sharks crosses the perimeter of this hospital, I will personally bury them. Otherwise, handle it defensively. My family is dying inside that building, Dominic. I don't give a damn about the docks."
Meanwhile, Bianca Vale was discovering the true cost of her arrogance. She had assumed Marco’s attachment to his wife was a temporary obligation, a symptom of traditional guilt over a pregnancy. She expected him to return to the penthouse, angry perhaps, but ultimately drawn back by her allure and sophistication.
Instead, two of Marco’s most ruthless enforcers arrived at her luxury apartment. They did not raise their voices, nor did they draw weapons. They simply placed a single cardboard box on her marble kitchen island.
"You have two hours to pack whatever fits in this box," the lead enforcer stated flatly. "The lease on this penthouse has been terminated. Your bank accounts associated with Mr. Moretti's firms have been frozen. A one-way ticket to Miami leaves at noon."
Bianca’s face contorted with indignation. "Do you know who I am? Marco loves me! He will destroy you for this!"
The enforcer looked at her with a chilling pity.

"You answered the wrong phone call, Miss Vale," he said. "To Mr. Moretti, you aren't a lover anymore. You're the ghost that killed his daughter's peace. You're lucky you're getting a plane ticket instead of a concrete jacket."
When Bianca tried to call Marco, she found her number blocked, her messages deleted into a void. She was entirely erased from his ledger, an expensive mistake liquidated without a second thought. But the damage she had initiated was already fracturing the foundation of the Moretti syndicate. Rivals saw a distracted boss, lieutenants smelled vulnerability, and the empire built on fear began to tremble.
