Chapter 4 - The Vance Legacy

I stood up, placing myself shielding Maya and our daughters from my mother and Victoria.
“Mother? What are you doing here?” I demanded.
Eleanor Vance, the matriarch of Vance Enterprises, strode into the small hospital room as if she owned it. Her sharp eyes swept over the cramped space with utter disdain, landing briefly on Maya before settling on me.
“I am here to protect this family from a disastrous scandal,” Eleanor said smoothly. “Victoria called me. She explained the absurd scene you caused at the restaurant. Ethan, you are a high-profile architect. You are about to sign a fifty-million-dollar city contract. You cannot allow a bitter ex-girlfriend and two unknown street children to destroy everything we’ve built.”
“Unknown children?” I laughed bitterly. “Look at them, Mother! Look at Lily and Mia! They have my eyes, my face! They are your granddaughters!”
“They are an inconvenient liability,” my mother replied without flinching. She signaled to the two men behind her. “Gentlemen, please escort these children and this woman out of this facility. We have arranged for them to be transferred to a private shelter outside the state.”
“Don’t you dare lay a hand on them!” I shouted, stepping forward. “If any of your thugs touch my family, I will burn Vance Enterprises to the ground!”
Victoria stepped out from behind my mother, her face twisted with a mixture of anger and desperate obsession. “Ethan, think rationally! Maya is dying anyway! Look at her! What can she offer you? I’ve spent seven years making you the man you are today! I helped you build your firm! You belong with me, not with this beggar and her bastards!”
Slap.
The sound echoed sharply in the quiet hospital room.
It was Maya. Despite her weakness, she had pulled herself up, her eyes blazing with a mother’s fierce rage. She had slapped Victoria across the face with every ounce of strength she had left.
“Do not... call my children... bastards,” Maya breathed heavily, resting her hand on her chest as the heart monitor began to beep rapidly.
“Maya! Lie down, please!” I rushed to her side, supporting her back as the heart monitor’s rhythm grew wildly unstable.
“Get out!” I roared at my mother and Victoria. “Get out before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing, harassment, and fraud! I know what you two did seven years ago! I will find every document, every bribe, every lie, and I will ruin both of you!”
My mother’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of real fear. She knew I wasn’t making empty threats. As the lead architect and a major shareholder in the family firm, I held enough legal power to initiate an independent audit that could destroy her reputation.
“You’re making a grave mistake, Ethan,” Eleanor warned, stepping back toward the door. “Choose them, and you lose everything. Your company, your money, your family name.”
“I don’t care about your money, Mother,” I said, looking her straight in the eye. “I care about my daughters.”
With a harsh glare, my mother turned and walked out, Victoria scrambling after her like a defeated shadow.

As soon as the door closed, the heart monitor let out a sharp, continuous beep. Maya collapsed back onto the pillows, her eyes fluttering shut.
“Doctor!” I screamed into the hallway. “Help! Someone help her!”
