Chapter 10 - The Toast of Life

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the city’s botanical gardens was filled with warmth, flowers, and the joyful sounds of laughter and music. Friends, colleagues, and extended family gathered to celebrate the wedding of Ethan Vance and Maya Lin.

The room was decorated not with opulent, cold grandeur, but with warm string lights, wild garden roses, and colorful framed photographs documenting our journey over the past eighteen months—photos of school plays, family beach trips, birthday parties, and quiet mornings at home.

At the center of the main table sat Lily and Mia, wearing matching flower-girl dresses, proudly sporting small flower crowns on their heads. They were busy eating wedding cake, their faces smudged with chocolate frostings.

I stood up at the head table, holding a glass of sparkling champagne.

The entire room went quiet, looking toward me, waiting for the groom’s toast.

I looked at Maya, who sat beside me, radiant in her lace wedding gown, holding my hand tightly under the table. I looked at my daughters, whose laughter was the greatest melody of my life.

“Two years ago,” I began, my voice echoing warmly throughout the venue, “I was sitting in an exclusive restaurant, raising a glass to a future that was built on a foundation of lies. I thought I had everything figured out. I thought my life was complete.”

I paused, smiling warmly down at Lily and Mia.

“And then, two seven-year-old girls walked through the doors, pointed at me, and said five words that changed my life forever: ‘You’re our dad.’”

The guests smiled, some of them wiping away soft tears.

“That night, I was forced to choose between the comfortable lie I was living and the terrifying, unknown truth,” I continued. “Choosing the truth was the best decision I ever made. The truth brought me back to the woman I have loved since the moment I saw her in Florence. The truth gave me two beautiful, brave daughters who taught me what it truly means to be a father.”

I raised my glass high, looking around the room at all the people who supported us through our journey.

“Seven years were stolen from us,” I said, my voice thick with emotion and joy. “But today, standing here with my wife and my daughters, I know that the best chapters of our story are just beginning. To truth, to resilience, and to eternal love.”

“To love!” the crowd cheered in unison, raising their glasses.

I placed my glass down and pulled Maya up from her chair, bringing her into a gentle dance as the orchestra began to play a soft love song. Lily and Mia ran over, joining us on the dance floor, pulling at our clothes until I picked Mia up in my right arm and Maya lifted Lily in hers.

We danced together under the glowing lights, a complete, unbroken family.

The nightmare was over. The truth had set us free, and our happily ever after was finally here.
