Chapter 6 - The Whispers in the Dark

Love in the Vercelli empire was not a soft, delicate thing; it was a fortress built on mutual trust and absolute loyalty. Over the next year, Saraphina became more than just Dante’s partner in private—she became his anchor in public.

She attended gala dinners on his arm, draped in silk and diamonds, standing tall beside the most feared boss in the tri-state area. The underworld took notice. They saw the way Dante looked at her—not as a decoration, but as an equal, a queen whose word held the same weight as his own.

However, peace in their world was always an illusion.

It began with minor disruptions: shipment delays at the docks, quiet intimidation of local business owners under Vercelli protection, and whispers of a new, aggressive faction rising in the city's underbelly. The Moretti family, long-time rivals who had been subdued during Dante’s rise to power, had a new leader: Julian Moretti, a young, ruthless sociopath who believed Dante had grown soft.

"He thinks you're weak because you spend your time building parks and funding museums," Marco, Dante’s second-in-command, spat during a late-night strategy session in Dante's office. "He thinks the girl has made you soft, Boss."

Saraphina sat in the corner of the office, reviewing financial reports. She didn't flinch at Marco’s words. She had learned the language of these men, and she knew Marco wasn't insulting her—he was stating a dangerous truth about how their enemies perceived them.

Dante sat behind his massive desk, puffing calmly on a cigar. "Let Julian think what he wishes. Arrogance makes men careless."

"He’s reaching out to your father, Dante," Marco added quietly.

The room went dead silent. Saraphina froze, her pen hovering over the paper.

Dante’s eyes narrowed, a cold, deadly light igniting in their depths. "Martin Vale?"

"Yes," Marco said. "Martin’s been drinking heavily in Moretti territory. He’s been running his mouth, telling anyone who will listen that you stole his daughter and ruined his life. Julian’s people pulled him out of a gutter two nights ago. They’re keeping him in a safehouse in Queens."

Saraphina felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. Her father was pathetic, ruined, and broke, but he was also bitter. A bitter man with intimate knowledge of her past was a weapon in the hands of someone like Julian Moretti.

"He knows nothing of value," Saraphina spoke up, her voice calm despite the racing of her heart. "He hasn't seen me in over a year. He knows nothing about the foundation's security or the villa."

"He knows you are Dante's weakness," Marco said plainly. "And to a man like Moretti, that is all the value he needs."

Dante stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the desk. His presence filled the room, heavy and suffocating. "Martin Vale was spared because Saraphina asked for his life. If he chooses to align himself with my enemies, he forfeits that mercy."

He looked at Saraphina, his eyes asking an unspoken question. He was offering her the final say, giving her the authority over the man who had tormented her childhood.

Saraphina stood up, walking over to Dante’s side. She looked at Marco, then turned her gaze to Dante. The fear she used to feel when her father’s name was mentioned was completely gone, replaced by a cold, protective rage for the life and the man she had chosen.

"He made his choice a long time ago, Dante," she said clearly. "Do what you must to protect our home."

Dante reached out, taking her hand and kissing the back of her knuckles. "Understood," he murmured. "Marco, lock down the estate. Double the guards at the foundation. Julian Moretti wants a war. We will give him one."
