Chapter 10 - The Dawn After the Winter

Five years later.

The morning sun rose over the rolling hills of Old Westbury, casting a warm, golden glow across the gardens of the Villa Vercelli. The air was crisp and sweet, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine and fresh pine.

On the grand stone terrace overlooking the estate, Saraphina sat at a long teak table, drinking coffee and reading the morning paper. She wore a simple, elegant silk dress, her dark hair pinned back casually. On the front page of the metro section was a headline announcing the opening of the Vercelli Children’s Hospital—a fifty-million-dollar facility built entirely through the foundation she commanded.

From the gardens below came the sound of joyful laughter.

Saraphina looked over the stone balustrade. Down on the manicured lawn, a four-year-old boy with dark, unruly curls and striking grey eyes was chasing a golden retriever puppy.

Following close behind them was Dante.

The dangerous mafia boss, the tyrant of the city's underworld, was currently down on one knee in the grass, laughing openly as his son, Leo, tackled him around the waist, knocking him backward into the soft lawn. Dante pulled the boy into his arms, tossing him into the air while the boy squealed with delight, before holding him tightly against his chest.

Saraphina felt a warmth spread through her chest—a feeling so profound and deep it made her eyes sting with happy tears.

Dante caught her looking at them. He stood up, hoisting Leo onto his broad shoulder, and walked up the stone steps toward the terrace. His hair was slightly disheveled, his expensive shirt wrinkled from the grass, but his face carried a peace that had been entirely absent on the cold Thanksgiving night they first met.

"Mommy!" Leo shouted excitedly from his father's shoulders. "Daddy said we can go see the horses today!"

"Is that so?" Saraphina smiled, reaching out to stroke her son's cheek. "Did Daddy also mention that you have to eat your breakfast first?"

Leo groaned dramatically, collapsing his head onto Dante’s dark hair. "Daddy, tell her breakfast is for big people!"

Dante chuckled, setting the boy down gently onto a chair at the breakfast table. "Your mother runs this house, Leo," Dante said, kissing the top of the boy's head. "What she says is the law. Even for me."

Leo sighed and accepted a plate of fresh fruit from a smiling maid, immediately distracted by a strawberry.

Dante walked over to Saraphina, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.

"You're thinking again," Dante murmured gently into her ear. "Where are your thoughts, my love?"

Saraphina leaned her head back against his chest, placing her hands over his forearms. She looked out over the vast, peaceful estate—the high stone walls that kept the dangerous world at bay, the gardens blooming with life, and their son laughing at the table.

"I was thinking about the cold," she said softly.

Dante’s arms tightened around her slightly, protective and warm. "The cold is gone, Saraphina. It will never touch you again."

"I know," she said, turning in his arms to face him. She reached up, placing her hand gently on his jawline, feeling the familiar, comforting warmth of his skin. "I was thinking about how a single moment can break your life into pieces... and how the right person can gather those pieces and build a kingdom."

Dante looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with an eternal, unwavering devotion. He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers—a gentle, sweet kiss that carried the weight of five years of peace, safety, and an absolute, unbreakable love.

"You built this kingdom, Saraphina," Dante whispered against her lips as the morning sun washed over them. "I just built the walls."

Together, they turned back toward the table, joining their son in the bright, golden warmth of a morning that belonged entirely to them.
