Part 6: Shadows in the Morning Light

The sun broke over Lake Michigan the next morning, painting the Chicago skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold. Marcus Vale sat at the massive mahogany desk in his ground-floor private study at Vale Tower, the central headquarters of his empire. Spread out before him were three thick, dusty binders bearing the red stamp: CONFIDENTIAL – ASHFORD ROW INCIDENT (2014).

The door swung open without a knock. Julian Vance walked in, looking like a man who hadn't slept in a decade, carrying a secure laptop and a heavy leather portfolio.

"They're all here," Julian said, dropping the portfolio onto the desk with a heavy thud. "Every signed bribe receipt, every falsified structural report, every name of the families we paid off to keep quiet. If these get out, Vale Summit goes under in forty-eight hours. Every asset we own will be frozen by the SEC, and we'll be looking at federal penitentiary time for corporate manslaughter."

Marcus didn't look up from the open pages. He was staring at a photograph clipped to page twelve: a group photo of the maintenance crew of Ashford Row, smiling in front of the building's main entrance. In the center, holding a wrench and smiling brightly, was Daniel Cross, wearing the exact same silver key pendant around his neck.

"Find him," Marcus said quietly.

"Find who? The kid?" Julian scoffed, pacing across the room. "Marcus, be reasonable. Kids like that live in the shadows of the South Side. They drift through abandoned rail yards, shelter systems, and foster loops. You can't just track down a ghost."

"He's not a ghost. He's flesh and blood, and he walked right into my hotel," Marcus said, slamming his hand down on the desk with a force that made Julian jump. "He has an anomalous biological marker that defied three years of modern medicine in ten seconds. Do you understand what that means, Julian? The boy's DNA is a biological blueprint. If the scientific community—or worse, the defense contractors we used to deal with—find out about him, they won't just study him. They'll cage him."

Julian stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing. "Are you saying..."

"I'm saying we don't just hand over these documents to the authorities," Marcus said, standing up, his suit jacket sharp against his rigid frame. "We use every resource Vale Summit has to find Kai, protect him, and offer him what his grandfather never got: absolute justice, restitution, and a home."

Before Julian could reply, the study door flew open. Mrs. Gable stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, clutching a tablet in her shaking hands.

"Mr. Vale... you need to see this. The security feeds from the perimeter of the tower... he's outside."
