The sun began to dip below the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden glow over the newly rebuilt courtyard of Ashford Row. The chatter of children playing, the laughter of families sharing a meal in the community hall, and the steady hum of medical equipment saving lives inside the research center blended together into a symphony of renewal.

Mia ran over to the bench, breathless and smiling from ear to ear, her cheeks flushed with healthy color.

"Dad! Kai! Come on, everyone is cutting the ribbon for the new research wing, and they want you both in the front row!"

Marcus stood up, dusting off his sweater, and looked down at Kai. The boy stood beside him, the silver key pendant resting securely against his chest, catching the last rays of the setting sun and glowing with a brilliant, amber light.

"Well, partner," Marcus said, offering his hand to the boy who had once walked into his life as a barefoot stranger with a score to settle. "Shall we?"

Kai looked at Marcus’s outstretched hand, grasped it firmly with a bright, confident smile, and nodded.
