Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF THE PORT

The black sedan carved through the rain-slicked streets of Blackridge like a sleek predator cutting through dark water. Inside, the leather seats smelled of rich cedar and cold metal. The partition between the driver and the back seat remained locked, sealing them in a tense, suffocating privacy.

Chloe stared straight ahead through the tinted window, watching the neon signs of the downtown district blur into streaks of crimson and amber.

“You broke our agreement,” she said, her voice dangerously quiet.

Leo did not turn his head. His gaze was fixed on the rhythmic sweeping of the windshield wipers. “The terms of the arrangement changed the moment a bullet shattered that window.”

“That was an attempt on me, or on whoever was in that bakery. It had nothing to do with making an official announcement to the city.”

“Everything involving you now involves the Moretti name,” Leo replied, his voice flat, unyielding granite. “The moment Bradley Hayes looked at you with disrespect, the moment he commented on your body, he crossed a line that belonged to me.”

Chloe scoffed, turning to face him. “You didn't do it to defend my honor, Leo. Don't romanticize this. You did it to stake your claim. You want every rival syndicate, every ambitious upstart in this city, to know exactly whose bloodline is expanding.”

Leo’s head turned slowly. His dark eyes caught the dim streetlights flashing outside, holding a sharp, dangerous heat.

“He called you fat,” Leo said, each word dropping like lead weight. “He mocked the physical toll our child has taken on your frame. A man who once claimed to love you reduced your worth to the aesthetic standards of high-society gossip. I didn’t just stake a claim, Chloe. I signed his death warrant. The only reason he walked out of that bakery breathing is because you were standing beside me.”

Chloe felt a shiver run down her spine, completely unrelated to the cold air conditioning of the car.

“He’s nothing to me,” she whispered. “Bradley is a footnote. A mistake I made before I knew what real power—or real danger—looked like.”

“Good,” Leo murmured, his hand moving across the console to rest on her thigh. The heat of his palm burned through her jeans. “Because if he ever looks in your direction again, he won't even have the luxury of a footnote.”

The car turned sharply, descending into the private, subterranean parking garage beneath Leo’s headquarters at the Blackridge Port Authority. Massive concrete pillars rose like ancient columns, flanked by armed guards in black tactical gear.

As the sedan came to a smooth halt, the door on Chloe’s side opened instantly. Vincent, Leo’s head of security, stood waiting with a black umbrella.

“The perimeter is secured, Mr. Moretti,” Vincent reported, his eyes darting professionally around the garage. “Initial reports indicate the shots came from a modified Glock. Professional grade. No prints on the casings left behind.”

“Track the vehicle,” Leo ordered, stepping out of the car and immediately reaching back to help Chloe. She ignored his hand, swinging her legs out and sliding across the leather seat to stand on her own.

Leo’s jaw tightened, but he didn't force the issue. Instead, he walked beside her, his massive frame shielding her from the damp chill of the underground garage as they took the private elevator straight to the penthouse suite.
