Chapter 6 - The Discovery in the Port

By 4:00 AM, the digital alarm on Nathaniel's desk blinked silently. He hadn't touched the tea, but he hadn't slept either. He sat staring at his secondary monitor as an encrypted file downloaded directly from Vance's secure server.

It was the raw telemetry data from the delivery truck that hit Elise’s SUV.

Nathaniel’s fingers flew across the keyboard, running a diagnostic script he used back in his software engineering days before he took over the family empire. The telemetry logs showed something the police report had completely omitted: The truck's braking system had been manually overridden via a remote digital diagnostic port five seconds before impact.

It wasn't an accident. It was a targeted assassination.

And the IP address transmitting the override code? It traced directly back to a private subnet registered under Cole Logistics—specifically, the internal routing server managed by his cousin and chief operating officer, Victor Cole.

A cold rage washed over Nathaniel, sharp and precise. Victor. The man who had stood beside him at the funeral, weeping into a handkerchief, whispering about family loyalty while positioning himself to take over the board.

Before Nathaniel could process the full, sickening implications, a sharp crash echoed from the upstairs hallway, followed immediately by Milo’s terrified shriek.

Nathaniel bolted out of his chair, abandoning the monitors. He cleared the grand staircase three steps at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs.

When he reached the hallway, the nursery door was wide open.

Standing inside was a stranger in a dark tactical jacket, holding a silenced pistol, while Jo stood between the intruder and the twin beds, her arms spread wide like a shield.
