Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS

With the corporate threat neutralized and his priorities firmly established, Nathan turned his energy toward the hardest project of his life: rebuilding his relationship with Lydia as a partner, not just a co-parent.

He officially purchased a sprawling, beautiful estate in the Portland hills, with sprawling gardens for the girls to play in and a light-filled studio for Clara. He ensured Lydia’s shifts at Legacy Emanuel were restructured so she had ample time to rest and pursue her own career goals without burning out.

Yet, intimacy was a delicate bridge. Seven years of emotional distance had created habits of self-reliance that were hard to break.

One rainy Saturday afternoon, while the triplets were at a birthday party hosted by their classmate, Nathan invited Lydia to walk through the rose gardens of the new house.

"You don't have to keep proving yourself, Nathan," Lydia said softly, her coat tucked tight against the chilly breeze. "You've done more in the last two months than most fathers do in a lifetime. The girls adore you."

"I don't care just about the girls loving me, Lydia," Nathan said, stopping near a stone fountain and turning to face her. "I care about you."

Lydia lowered her eyes. "Nathan..."

"I meant what I said seven years ago, before everything went wrong," Nathan gently placed a gloved hand on her shoulder. "I loved you then. I hated myself for how I treated you, but I never stopped loving you. I spent seven years pretending that building an empire was enough, but my life was empty."

"It was empty for me too," Lydia confessed, her voice breaking as she looked up into his sea-glass eyes. "Every time the girls did something amazing, every time they asked about their dad, I felt a wave of guilt so heavy I thought I’d sink. I was scared, Nathan. Scared that if I let you back in, you’d hurt me again."

"Then let me earn your trust back," Nathan begged softly. "Not as the man I was, but as the man I am now. No rush. No deadlines. Just us."

Lydia looked at him, seeing the maturity, the deep humility, and the unyielding love in his eyes. She stepped closer, closing the distance between them, and laid her head against his chest. Nathan wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight against the cold rain, feeling her heartbeat align with his own.
