Chapter 3 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Settling into a routine was both tender and treacherous. Nathan split his time between managing Westfield Systems from a home office and learning how to be a father. He discovered that Sophie liked her sandwiches cut into exact triangles, Clara needed three distinct shades of green to draw trees correctly, and Nora always left the last bite of her dinner for "later."

Yet, beneath the fragile peace, an undertow of tension remained between Nathan and Lydia. Seven years of silence, hurt, and unspoken words could not be erased overnight by a spacious house and expensive gifts.

One evening, after the triplets were safely asleep, Nathan found Lydia in the kitchen, staring out at the rain-slicked patio with a cup of chamomile tea in her hands.

"You're avoiding me," Nathan said gently, leaning against the doorframe.

"I'm adjusting," Lydia replied without turning around. "Seeing you with them... it’s everything I ever dreamed of, Nathan. But it’s also a reminder of everything we lost. You look at me like you’re waiting for an explanation I’ve already given you."

"I don't want an explanation, Lydia. I want to know how we bridge this," he stepped closer. "I missed seven years of their lives. Every tooth they lost, every fever, every step. Every night I spent building an empire, my daughters were growing up without me."

"I did what I thought was right!" Lydia turned, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You were obsessed, Nathan! If I had stayed, you would have treated them like another project on your calendar. I wanted them to be loved unconditionally, not squeezed between board meetings!"

"And you were right!" Nathan’s voice cracked, dropping to an intense whisper. "You were right about who I was. But I am not that man anymore. I would burn Westfield to the ground before I miss another second of their lives!"

The raw honesty of his words hung heavy in the warm kitchen. Lydia took a shaky breath, searching his face for the ruthless businessman she used to know, finding only a desperate father—and a man who still looked at her with profound, aching devotion.

Before either of them could speak further, a small sob sounded from the doorway.

They turned to see Clara standing there, clutching a drawing of five stick figures holding hands under a yellow sun.

"Are you going to yell again?" Clara whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Are you going to leave like the daddy in my storybooks?"

May you like

Nathan dropped to his knees instantly, holding his arms out. Clara flew into them, hiding her face in his shoulder. Lydia knelt beside them, placing her hand over Nathan’s back.

"No, sweetie," Nathan murmured into Clara’s hair, looking up at Lydia with fierce resolve. "Nobody is leaving. Never again."
