Chapter 9 - The Light on the Shore

The forest canopy swallowed the headlights of Daniel's SUV as he wound his way down the narrow dirt track toward the coast.
As he rounded the final bend, his heart skipped a beat.
Through the dense tangle of pine trees and ferns, a single, warm amber light flickered from the windows of the weathered cedar cabin.
A silver sedan—Claire’s car—was parked haphazardly near the porch.
Daniel cut his engine before the car even came to a complete stop. The silence of the island rushed in, accompanied only by the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves against the rocky shore below and the steady patter of rain on the pine needles.
He stepped out of the vehicle, his shoes sinking into the wet mud. He walked slowly up the wooden steps of the porch, every board groaning under his weight—just like the porch at Evelyn’s house earlier that day.
He raised his hand to knock, but his fingers hovered over the wood.
Through the sheer curtains of the window, he could see her.
Claire was sitting on the old worn-out sofa by the stone fireplace, wrapped in a faded wool blanket. She held a steaming mug in her hands, staring into the flickering flames of the hearth. Her hair was loose, falling over her shoulders, and her face was etched with a quiet, devastating exhaustion.
She looked smaller than she had in their sprawling lake house—more human, more real, and infinitely more precious.
Daniel’s throat tightened. He didn't knock. Instead, he gently turned the brass doorknob.
It wasn't locked.
The door creaked open, the sound cutting through the crackle of the fire.
Claire froze. She didn't turn around immediately; she simply stared into the flames, her shoulders stiffening.
"I locked the front door, Mom," Claire said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "How did you—"
"It's not your mother," Daniel said.
The mug slipped from Claire’s hands, crashing onto the wooden floorboards, sending ceramic shards and hot tea scattering across the room.

She spun around on the sofa, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she stared at Daniel standing in the doorway, water dripping from his tailored suit, his hair plastered to his forehead, and his chest heaving.
"Daniel?" she whispered, as if seeing a ghost. "How... how did you find me?"
