Chapter 10 - A New Vow

Daniel closed the door behind him, shutting out the storm, and took a slow step into the warm, cabin room.

"I went to Tacoma, Claire," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "I met Helen. I met Rebecca."

Color drained entirely from Claire’s face. She stood up slowly from the sofa, the blanket slipping from her shoulders to the floor. For a terrifying second, she looked cornered—like a soldier whose last line of defense had been breached.

"You shouldn't have gone there," Claire whispered, her voice breaking. "You had no right to—"

"I had every right," Daniel interrupted, taking another step closer. "You lied to me for six years, Claire. You carried the weight of the world on your shoulders, you sacrificed your career, your youth, your happiness, and our marriage... all so I could succeed. All so I wouldn't have to feel the pain of failure."

Tears spilled over Claire’s lashes, tracking hot down her cheeks. "I did it because you loved that company more than life itself! I couldn't bear to watch you lose everything you built!"

"And what about you?!" Daniel's voice cracked, the anguish finally breaking through his control as he closed the distance between them. He stopped just inches away from her, his hands trembling as he reached out to gently cup her face, his thumbs wiping away her tears. "Who was going to protect you from losing everything? Who was going to save us?"

Claire stared up at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "It was too late, Daniel. The damage was done. We were strangers."

"Then we'll become strangers who start over," Daniel said fiercely, shaking his head. "Today, I walked into my office, canceled a thirty-million-dollar acquisition, and resigned as CEO of Northstar. I told my board they could find someone else to run the empire, because the only thing I want to build for the rest of my life is right here."

Claire gasped, her eyes searching his face for any sign of hesitation or deceit. Finding none, a sob broke from her chest—not of sorrow this time, but of a profound, earth-shattering release.

"You... you resigned?" she whispered. "All those years of work..."

"Work means nothing without you to come home to," Daniel murmured, pulling her gently into his arms.

Claire buried her face against his wet chest, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist as she finally let herself break, crying the tears she had held back for six agonizing years. Daniel held her against him, burying his face in her hair, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her heart against his own.

Outside, the storm began to clear, parting the clouds to let a pale moonlight flood across the rocky shores of San Juan Island.

The marriage that had nearly ended in a quiet, sterile office was reborn in a rustic cabin by the sea—not built on the fragile foundation of corporate success, but on the indestructible bedrock of a love that had quietly survived the darkest storm imaginable.

And as they stood there together in the quiet warmth of the hearth, Daniel knew they finally had their happily ever after.
