Chapter 9 - Shadows at the Gate
Peace, however, rarely settles permanently without being tested.
It happened on a warm Friday afternoon in early July. Damian was in his study reviewing international acquisitions when his chief of private security, Miller, knocked urgently and pushed the door open without waiting for permission.
"Mr. Russo, we have a situation at the main gate," Miller said, his face tight.
Damian didn't look up from his monitor. "Define situation."
"It's Arthur Vance—the cousin of the disgraced director we fired six months ago," Miller said grimly. "He’s managed to bypass local jurisdiction by filing a retaliatory civil suit, claiming our internal audit illegally seized assets belonging to his family trust. He’s brought a court bailiff and local process servers to the gate, demanding a full inspection of the estate premises under the guise of asset recovery."
Damian’s fingers froze on the keyboard. The temperature in the study dropped ten degrees instantly.
"He's targeting Claire," Damian stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
"Yes, sir. He knows she was the primary witness whose initial financial documents triggered the federal investigation against his cousin. He's trying to intimidate her into recanting her statements under civil deposition."
At that moment, the door to the study swung open. Claire stood there, pale but composed, holding a stack of corporate reports. She had heard enough through the intercom system in the outer office to understand the threat.

"I won't let him do it," Claire said firmly, stepping into the room. "If he thinks he can walk in here and reopen that nightmare, he's wrong."
"You won't have to face him, Claire," Damian said, standing up slowly from his desk, buttoning the cuffs of his suit jacket with cold precision. He walked over to the mahogany coat rack, picked up his tailored overcoat, and slid it on. "No one steps foot onto this estate to harass my people. Miller, call the local precinct chief. Tell him to meet me at the main gate in five minutes. Let's see how much jurisdiction Arthur Vance has when he's facing federal obstruction charges."
