Chapter 10 - The Final Sunset

The confrontation at the main security gates of the Russo estate was swift and absolute.
Arthur Vance—a smug, slick-haired corporate lawyer in an expensive Italian suit—stood beside a pair of local process servers, waving a sheaf of civil paperwork at the estate's security guards.
"You can't block a court-ordered inspection!" Vance shouted as Damian's black SUV glided smoothly down the private drive, coming to a halt right in front of them.
The door opened, and Damian stepped out. He looked like an avenging angel of corporate justice, flanked by Miller and two local police cruisers that had pulled up from the opposite direction with their lights flashing silently.
Vance faltered, stepping back as Damian approached. "Mr... Mr. Russo. This is a legitimate civil inquiry regarding—"
"This is a desperate, retaliatory harassment campaign by a disgraced legal hack trying to protect his family's criminal enterprise," Damian interrupted, his voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the idling engines. He turned to the lead police officer, who stepped forward briskly.
"Officer, Mr. Vance is currently in violation of a federal restraining order prohibiting retaliatory contact against witnesses in an active financial fraud case," Damian said calmly, handing over a folder provided by his legal team. "Take him into custody for questioning."
"Wait, this is an outrage! You can't do this!" Vance yelled as the officers stepped forward, catching his arms and clicking the steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Welcome to Russo Holdings," Damian whispered coldly as Vance was hauled away toward the police cruiser.
Within ten minutes, the gates were clear, the process servers had fled, and absolute silence returned to the long, tree-lined drive of the estate.
That evening, the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, painting the clouds in shades of amber, violet, and gold.
Inside the main dining hall, a warm fire crackled in the hearth. Damian, Claire, and Lily sat together at the large mahogany dining table. There were no ledgers, no threats, no fear—only the soft clink of silverware and the sound of Lily chatting happily about her teddy bear's new wardrobe.

Claire looked across the table at Damian, her eyes shining with a deep, unspoken gratitude.
Damian met her gaze, raising his water glass in a silent toast. The cold, impenetrable fortress of his life had finally let the light in, and for the first time in thirty-nine years, Damian Russo knew he was truly home.
