Chapter 8 - The Truth Revealed

By morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, cloudless sky and a lawn carpeted with fallen pine needles. The power returned at dawn, but the atmosphere inside the estate had irrevocably changed.

After making breakfast for the boys, who were happily playing with their building blocks in the warm sunroom, Nathaniel asked Rose to join him in his private study.

Rose entered the room cautiously. She felt a nervous flutter in her stomach, remembering the intimate words they had shared in the lantern light the night before.

Nathaniel was standing by his mahogany desk, holding an official-looking document. He wasn't dressed in his corporate suits, nor was he wearing his casual loungewear. He looked serious, focused, but incredibly gentle.

"Rose, please, sit down," he said, gesturing to one of the leather armchairs.

Rose sat down, clasping her hands tightly in her lap. "Is... is everything okay with the boys, Nathaniel?"

"The boys are better than they’ve been in three years," Nathaniel said, sitting in the chair opposite her. He set the paper on the table between them. "I asked you in here because I need to make a correction. A mistake I’ve been making for five months."

Rose felt her heart drop slightly. "A mistake?"

"Yes," Nathaniel said, looking into her eyes with absolute earnestness. "I hired you as a housekeeper, Rose. I paid you a wage to clean my floors, wash my dishes, and organize my home. But you didn't just clean this house. You healed it. You brought my children back to life. You brought me back to life."

He reached out and covered her hands with his.

"I cannot, in good conscience, keep paying you to be my maid," Nathaniel continued softly. "Because every time I hand you a paycheck, it feels like an insult to what you actually mean to this family."

Rose’s eyes welled with tears. "Nathaniel, I don't care about the money or the job title. I love Ethan and Liam. I... I care about you. I don't need—"

"I know you don't," Nathaniel interrupted, a soft smile playing on his lips. "And that is precisely why you deserve everything. I want to terminate your contract as my employee."

Rose blinked, startled. "You’re... firing me?"

"No," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a tender, intense whisper. He slid down from his chair onto one knee in front of her, taking both her hands in his. "I am asking you to stay. Not as a housekeeper. Not as a nanny. But as my partner. As someone who shares this life, this home, and this family with me."

Rose gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"I know we came from entirely different worlds," Nathaniel said, his eyes shining with unreserved devotion. "I know I built a cold, arrogant wall around myself after Claire died. But you broke through every single inch of it without even trying. You showed me that money means nothing if you don't have warmth to share it with. I love you, Rose. My sons love you. Will you stay with us? Not because it’s your job... but because you belong here?"

Tears spilled over Rose’s cheeks, hot and joyful. She looked down at the powerful man kneeling before her, stripped of all his corporate armor, offering her his heart with complete vulnerability.

"Yes," Rose sobbed softly, pulling him up to his feet. "Yes, Nathaniel. I love you too. I’ve loved this family since the moment I heard Ethan try to play that little red guitar."

Nathaniel pulled her into his arms, holding her tight, burying his face in her hair as he let out a long breath he felt like he’d been holding for two long, painful years.
