Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Shadows

As summer yielded to a crisp, golden autumn, the news of Nathaniel Owens’ radical lifestyle change began to circulate through Seattle’s high-society circles.

The wealthy elite of Lake Washington were used to scandal, but Nathaniel’s transformation was a mystery they couldn't refrain from dissecting. The man who had been a ghost at charity galas and corporate functions was now frequently spotted at local parks, pushing his boys on swings, accompanied by a modest, clear-eyed woman who clearly didn't belong to their social register.

Rumors began to circulate.

At an exclusive charity auction for the Seattle Children's Hospital—an event Nathaniel felt obligated to attend due to his late wife’s long-standing involvement—he walked in wearing a dark tux, with Ethan and Liam on either side of him. Standing a discreet three steps behind them, wearing an elegant but simple dark navy dress Nathaniel had insisted on buying for her, was Rose.

"Look at him," whispered Victoria Sterling, a prominent socialite whose husband sat on several corporate boards with Nathaniel. She leaned in toward her companion, sipping champagne. "Hiring a maid and turning her into a surrogate mother. It's scandalous. Poor Claire hasn't even been gone three years, and he’s parading the staff around."

"They say she’s just an opportunist," another woman chimed in, eyeing Rose’s modest silver necklace. "A girl from some small town taking advantage of a grieving billionaire and two vulnerable children. It’s pathetic."

The whispers weren't quiet enough.

Rose heard every word. She kept her chin up, her posture regal, but the color slowly drained from her cheeks. She looked down at her hands, feeling out of place amidst the glittering silk dresses, diamond neckpieces, and cold, calculating gazes. She felt the heavy weight of her humble background pressing down on her shoulders. She was a housekeeper, a woman who scrubbed toilets and folded linen. What was she doing here, posing as part of a world built on power and old money?

She stepped back quietly, intending to slip away toward the terrace to catch her breath, but a warm, firm hand gently caught her wrist.

Nathaniel had stepped back from a conversation with a bank president. He looked down at her, his dark eyes fierce with an emotion that made her heart skip a beat.

"Don't," Nathaniel said softly, his fingers shifting down to wrap gently around her hand, locking his fingers with hers in full view of the entire room.

"Nathaniel," Rose whispered, trying subtly to pull away, her cheeks burning. "People are watching. They’re talking. I don't belong here. I should wait in the car—"

"You belong wherever my family is," Nathaniel said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. He didn't let go of her hand. Instead, he led her directly into the center of the ballroom, right past Victoria Sterling and her circle of gossiping elite.

Ethan ran up, tugging at Rose’s navy dress. "Miss Rose, look! They have mini cupcakes over there! Can we get one?"

Rose melted, kneeling down despite the expensive dress to fix Ethan’s bow tie. "Only if your father says it's okay before dinner," she said softly, giving the boy a loving smile that wiped away all her anxiety.

Nathaniel stood above them, looking down at the woman on her knees surrounded by his children. In that moment, surrounded by hundreds of millionaires, aristocrats, and powerful executives, Nathaniel felt richer than he ever had in his life. And he realized that the whispers of high society didn't matter at all. The only thing that mattered was protecting the fragile, beautiful life they were building together.
