Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Accomplices

The investigation into Callum’s financial dealings proved to be a descent into a labyrinth of greed that went far deeper than any of us had anticipated.

For two weeks, I sat with Arthur and a team of forensic accountants in a war room filled with bank statements, tax returns, and corporate filings. The deeper we dug, the more we realized that Callum's affair with Blythe was not a sudden lapse in judgment. It was a highly organized, long-term financial conspiracy.

"Look at this, Vivienne," said Marcus Vance, a senior forensic accountant who was also, ironically, Callum's cousin. Unlike the rest of the Vance family, Marcus had always been an outsider, a man of quiet integrity who had long detested Callum's arrogance. He had volunteered his services the moment the scandal broke.

He pointed to a spreadsheet on the large monitor. "These are the transaction records for 'Aegis Holdings,' a shell company registered in Delaware. Over the last eighteen months, Callum transferred over four million dollars from your family’s private foundation into this account."

"And who owns Aegis Holdings?" I asked, leaning forward, my eyes scanning the complex web of shell companies.

"Officially? A nominee director in the Cayman Islands," Marcus said. "But we managed to trace the IP addresses used to access the online banking portal. They all trace back to a single residential IP address: the luxury penthouse downtown registered in Blythe Henderson's name."

I felt a cold smile touch my lips. "So Blythe wasn't just a pretty face Callum bought expensive jewelry for. She was his business partner. She was actively managing the stolen funds."

"It's worse than that," Marcus continued, clicking to a new tab. "We found emails between Callum and Blythe dating back nearly four years. They didn't meet at a charity gala like Callum claimed. Blythe was working as a junior financial analyst at the firm that managed your father's estate. She was the one who discovered the loophole in the trust agreement regarding the biological heir. She brought the idea to Callum."

The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with a sickening click. Blythe had targeted Callum—or Callum had targeted her—not out of passion, but out of a shared, predatory desire to steal my family's fortune. They had planned this from the very beginning. The affair, the pregnancy, the public humiliation of me at the chapel—it was all a calculated performance designed to force me into a state of emotional instability so they could claim I was unfit to care for the child, leaving them with sole custody and sole control of the fifty-million-dollar trust.

"They planned to declare you mentally incompetent, Vivienne," Arthur said, his voice tight with anger as he joined us at the table. "We found a draft of a petition for conservatorship in Callum's personal email files. They were going to use your history of grief and therapy after your father's death to argue that you were unable to manage your own affairs or make decisions for the child."

I sat back in my chair, a chill running down my spine. If I hadn't remained calm, if I had reacted with the anger and hysteria they had expected of me at that dinner table, I would have walked straight into their trap. Every tear, every scream would have been documented and used as evidence of my "unstable" mental state.

"They underestimated me," I said, my voice quiet but filled with an icy, unbreakable strength. "They thought because I was quiet, I was weak. They thought because I loved my father, my grief made me vulnerable."

"Well, they’re about to find out how wrong they were," Arthur said, a predatory smile appearing on his face. "With this evidence, Blythe is no longer just an accomplice. She is a co-conspirator in wire fraud, grand larceny, and embezzlement. The federal prosecutor is going to have a field day with this."

"What about her pregnancy?" I asked. "If she is indicted, will she be sent to prison immediately?"

May you like

"Given her medical condition, the judge will likely allow her to remain under house arrest or in a secure medical facility until she gives birth," Arthur explained. "But the moment that child is born, she will be processed into federal custody. She won't spend a single day raising your child, Vivienne. Not one."

"Good," I said, looking at the image of the luxury penthouse on the screen. "It's time to pay Blythe a visit. I think she needs to understand exactly what her future looks like."
