Chapter 4 - The Legal Gambit

The morning sun rose over the city not with warmth, but with the cold, gray clarity of a winter dawn.

I sat in the high-backed leather chair of my attorney’s penthouse office, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched on the glass desk before me. Across from me sat Arthur Pendelton, a man who had handled my father's legal affairs for forty years and who looked at me not just as a client, but with the protective fiercely loyal eye of a surrogate uncle.

"We have filed the emergency injunction, Vivienne," Arthur said, sliding a thick blue folder across the desk. "As of eight o'clock this morning, all of Callum's personal and business assets have been frozen by court order. The Vance Family Trust has been placed under temporary receivership pending a full forensic audit. He cannot spend a single dollar without a judge's approval."

"And Blythe?" I asked, my voice calm, though my heart beat with a steady, rhythmic tension.

"The court has issued a protective order," Arthur explained, his expression grave. "Due to the unique and horrific nature of the case—specifically, the unauthorized use of your biological material—we have secured a temporary custody and medical guardianship order over the pregnancy. Blythe Henderson is legally prohibited from leaving the state, and she must submit to weekly medical examinations by a court-appointed physician. She cannot make any decisions regarding the pregnancy without your express, written consent."

I closed my eyes for a brief second, feeling a wave of complicated emotions wash over me. The child Blythe was carrying was genetically mine—the last physical link to the family I had lost, the child I had grieved for when Callum told me our IVF cycles had failed. To know that my child was being carried by the woman who had helped destroy my marriage was a grotesque irony, but I felt a fierce, protective instinct bloom in my chest.

"I want her monitored 24/7, Arthur," I said, opening my eyes. "Not to harass her, but to protect the child. Callum is desperate. A desperate man does desperate things, and now that he knows the child won't bring him the fortune he craved, he may view the pregnancy as a liability."

"I’ve already hired a private security firm," Arthur reassured me, reaching over to squeeze my hand. "Two female agents will be stationed outside her apartment around the clock. They will accompany her to every medical appointment. Callum won't be able to get within a mile of her."

The door to the office opened, and Arthur’s assistant stepped in, looking slightly breathless. "Mr. Pendelton... Vivienne. Callum Vance is downstairs in the lobby. He's demanding to see you. He’s... very agitated. The building security is holding him, but he’s making a scene."

I looked at Arthur, who immediately began to reach for the phone to call the police.

"No, Arthur," I said, stopping him with a gentle hand on his arm. "Let him up."

"Vivienne, that's not wise," Arthur warned. "He is highly unstable right now. He has lost everything in the span of twelve hours."

"Which is exactly why I need to see him," I said, a cold, hard resolve settling over me. "I want him to look at me and realize that there is no deal to be made. I want him to see the face of the woman who ended him."

Two minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the office burst open. Callum strode in, his hair disheveled, his expensive Italian suit wrinkled, and his eyes bloodshot. He looked like a man who had spent the night pacing the floor of a burning house.

"Vivienne!" he gasped, ignoring Arthur entirely and lunging toward the desk. "You have to stop this. You have to call off the frozen accounts. I can’t even pay my mortgage! My partners are calling me, asking why the firm's accounts are locked! You're ruining me!"

"You ruined yourself, Callum," I said, not moving an inch, my voice as steady as granite. "The moment you forged my signature and stole my embryos, you signed your own financial and social death warrant."

"We can work this out," he pleaded, his voice cracking as he dropped his hands onto the desk, leaning in close. "We can issue a joint statement. We can say it was a misunderstanding... a private surrogacy agreement that we both agreed to. If we do that, the trust will still pay out. We can split it! Fifty-fifty, Vivienne! You’ll have twenty-five million dollars, and you can have the baby! I’ll sign away all my parental rights! You can raise the child alone, just like you wanted!"

I looked at him, feeling a deep, profound sense of disgust. Even now, stripped of his dignity, exposed as a thief and a fraud, his mind could only calculate the monetary value of a human life. He was willing to sell his own biological connection to the child—a child he had claimed to want—for a payout.

"You really don't get it, do you?" I said softly. "I don't need your permission to have my child, Callum. The court will strip your parental rights based on the criminal fraud charges alone. And as for the money... my father's trust is mine. All of it. You won't see a single penny. You are going to be left with nothing but your debts, your tarnished name, and a criminal record."

"You b*tch," he snarled, his face contorting into a mask of pure rage. He raised his hand, his fingers curling into a fist.

Before he could even step forward, the side door of the office opened, and two burly, suit-clad security guards stepped into the room, their hands resting near their holsters. Callum froze, looking at the guards, then back at me.

"Get out of my sight, Callum," I said, turning my back to him and looking out the window at the sprawling city below. "The next time we speak, it will be through a glass partition in a visitation room."
