Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

That night, no one in the Reed mansion slept.
While Maya slept soundly in the primary guest suit with baby Lily cradled safely beside her, Tyler sat in his subterranean vault—a high-security panic room built beneath the estate where he kept sensitive corporate files, high-level encryption servers, and Clara’s personal keepsakes.
Harper sat on a leather sofa nearby, hugging her knees. She refused to go to sleep unless she knew her father was safe.
"Daddy?" Harper asked softly, her big brown eyes reflecting the glowing blue light of the vault monitors. "Was Mom really a hero?"
Tyler paused, looking at his daughter. He walked over and sat beside her, putting his arm around her tiny shoulders. "Your mother was the bravest person I ever knew, Harper. She fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves. Just like you did today."
"Then why did bad people hurt her?" Harper asked, tears welling in her eyes.
"Because bad people are afraid of the truth," Tyler said softly. "But we aren't going to let them hide in the dark anymore."
Marcus entered the vault carrying a metallic briefcase recovered from Clara’s old storage unit downtown—a unit Tyler hadn't opened in four years.
"We cracked the combination," Marcus said, laying the case on the table. "Clara set up a double-blind encryption lock using the coordinates of where you two first met in Paris."
Tyler approached the case, his fingers trembling as he entered the coordinates: 48.8566° N, 2.3522° E.
The lock clicked open.
Inside lay a thick leather journal, a series of encrypted flash drives, and a photograph that made Tyler’s breath hitch.
The photo showed two young teenage girls—Clara and Maya—standing side by side in a sunlit garden, holding hands, smiling radiantly. On the back of the photo, written in Clara’s elegant handwriting, were the words:
“To my secret twin, Maya. No matter how far they separate us, my heart will always find yours. - C.”
Tyler picked up the journal and opened it to the final entry, dated three days before Clara’s death four years ago.
“October 12th—I found out the truth today,” Clara had written. “Arthur Pendelton isn't my benefactor. He separated me from Maya when we were children to keep control over our mother’s estate. But it’s worse than that. Pendelton and Julian Sterling are using private medical clinics to harvest DNA from high-net-worth individuals to build an illegal surrogacy and genetic manipulation ring for foreign billionaires.
They have my genetic profile. They have Tyler’s profile from our IVF treatments. If anything happens to me, Tyler must protect our remaining embryos. Pendelton will use them to create heirs for his syndicate. If you are reading this, Tyler... I love you. Protect our family.”
Tyler closed the journal. Tears rolled down his face—tears of grief, but also of an overwhelming, burning clarity.
Clara hadn't kept secrets out of deceit; she had kept them to protect Tyler and Harper from a lethal political monster. She had died trying to save Maya and stop Pendelton. And for four years, Tyler had lived in a gilded cage of grief, unaware that Clara’s fight was still alive.
"Marcus," Tyler said, wiping his eyes, his voice turning to pure ice. "Call our legal team. Call the FBI Special Crimes Unit in Washington. And get me a direct line to Arthur Pendelton."

"What are you going to do, Tyler?" Marcus asked.
"Pendelton is hosting his annual Charity Gala tomorrow night at the Grand Drake Hotel," Tyler said, standing tall. "He thinks he controls Chicago. He thinks he bought my silence. Tomorrow night, we are going to finish what Clara started."
