Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Glass House

Within forty-five minutes, Tyler’s private executive SUV swept Maya and her infant daughter, named Lily, through the iron gates of his massive estate in Lake Forest.

While Harper excitedly showed Maya to the guest suite—insisting on fetching warm blankets, organic soup, and heated towels—Tyler stood in his private glass-walled study, staring at a framed portrait of Clara that hung above the fireplace.

His head was pounding. His personal head of security and private investigator, Marcus (a trusted ex-military operative), stepped into the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind him.

"You ran the emergency prints?" Tyler asked without turning around.

"I did," Marcus said quietly. He held a tablet in his hand. "We lifted Maya’s thumbprint from the water glass in the kitchen, and we swept the baby's cheek for a rapid DNA cheek swab while the paramedics checked her over. The baby is severely malnourished, Tyler, but she's going to be okay thanks to Harper's intervention."

"And the DNA?" Tyler turned, his face pale and hollow. "The locket?"

Marcus hesitated, looking deeply uncomfortable. "The DNA results from the express lab just hit my encrypted server. Tyler... Maya Vance is a 99.9% full maternal match to your late wife, Clara."

Tyler closed his eyes. "A sister? Clara never had a sister. I read her family history. I met her aunt before she passed. Clara was an only child born in Denver."

"That's what Clara told you," Marcus said, tapping his tablet screen and projecting a file onto the monitor. "But look at this. Twenty-four years ago, Clara’s mother gave birth to twins at a private clinic in rural Illinois. The birth records were sealed under a high-level non-disclosure agreement funded by an offshore trust."

"Offshore trust?" Tyler’s eyebrows furrowed. "Funded by whom?"

"The trust traces back to Arthur Pendelton," Marcus revealed.

Tyler froze. Arthur Pendelton was one of Chicago's most powerful political titans, a senior member of the charity board Tyler chaired, and Clara’s former mentor when she worked as an architectural consultant before they married.

"Why would Pendelton seal the birth of twin girls?" Tyler demanded.

"Because Maya wasn't just a secret twin," Marcus lowered his voice. "When the twins were sixteen, Clara was sent to an elite European boarding school. Maya, however, was placed in a state foster system under a false name. It gets worse, Tyler. Maya’s baby... little Lily?"

Tyler gripped the edge of his mahogany desk. "What about Lily?"

"The rapid DNA match between Lily and your own DNA came back twenty minutes ago," Marcus said, holding Tyler’s gaze. "Tyler... Lily isn't just Maya's daughter. Lily is genetically your biological daughter."

The room seemed to lose all oxygen. Tyler staggered back a step.

"That's impossible!" Tyler shouted, his executive composure breaking entirely. "I never met Maya in my life! I have been faithful to Clara's memory since the day she died! I haven't touched another woman in four years! How could I possibly be the father of a six-month-old baby?!"

"I don't know yet," Marcus admitted grimly. "But the genetic code doesn't lie. Lily shares 50% of your DNA and 50% of Maya's DNA. Which means either someone harvested your genetic material, or..."

Marcus didn't finish the sentence, but the implication hung heavy in the air.

At that moment, the door to the study slid open. Maya stood in the threshold, wrapped in a plush cream robe that belonged to Clara. She had washed her hair, revealing the shimmering golden strands that matched Clara's perfectly. She looked small, terrified, yet resolute.

"She's sleeping," Maya said softly, referring to little Lily. "Harper is sitting by her crib reading her a story."

Tyler looked at Maya, his heart torn between overwhelming grief, confusion, and a bizarre, rising fury.

"Maya," Tyler said, walking toward her slow and deliberate. "Who gave you that dragonfly locket?"

Maya reached up, her hand instinctively cupping the silver pendant. "I told you. My mother gave it to me on her deathbed three years ago. But... before she died, she told me a secret. She said I had a twin sister named Clara who was taken from us at birth by a powerful man."

"Arthur Pendelton?" Tyler asked.

Maya’s eyes widened in shock. "How do you know that name?"

"Because Arthur Pendelton was Clara's mentor," Tyler said, his blood running cold. "Maya... what happened six months ago? Who is Lily's father?"

Maya began to tremble, tears welling up in her eyes again. "Six months ago? I didn't get pregnant six months ago, Mr. Reed. Lily was born six months ago, but... I was held in a private fertility clinic in Zurich for over two years against my will."

Tyler felt a cold horror bloom in his gut. "What did you say?"

"I was a surrogate," Maya sobbed, sinking into an armchair. "They told me I was carrying an embryo created by my late sister Clara before she died. They told me Clara and her husband had frozen embryos preserved at a private storage facility. They said if I carried the baby to term, I would be paid five million dollars to start a new life. But after Lily was born... they tried to kill us both."
