Chapter 9 - A New Foundation
Two years passed. Melody turned ten, growing taller and gaining a confident, sparkling personality. She excelled in school and took up the baking club, learning how to make delicious treats using alternative ingredients like sunflower seed butter and oat milk.
Through Ramona, we occasionally heard updates about Gloria. She was completing her community service at a community center, tutoring children in reading. Ramona said she looked older, but her sharp edges had softened. She never tried to break the court order. She respected the boundary we had drawn in steel.
One day, a small package arrived in the mail for Dennis. It had no return address, just a familiar elegant handwriting. Inside was a beautiful, hand-bound recipe book.
Dennis opened it carefully. Every single recipe inside—from chocolate cakes to sugar cookies—had been meticulously rewritten. Across the top of the first page, Gloria had written: All recipes are 100% nut-free and safe for Melody.
There was no note asking to see her, no plea for forgiveness. Just the book.
Dennis smiled a sad, but peaceful smile. He placed the book on our kitchen counter. "We don't have to use it," he said.

It was a sign of true repentance: changing your behavior without expecting a reward or a relationship in return. We could appreciate the change from a safe, legal distance.
