Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Badge

The next morning, the sun broke through the hospital blinds, casting warm golden streaks across Melody’s bed. She was awake, coloring in a book the child-life specialist had brought her. To look at her, you might not know how close she had come to the edge, save for the IV line in her hand.
Detective Vance—no relation, though the irony wasn't lost on us—arrived at 9:00 AM. He was a seasoned investigator with tired eyes and a gentle manner when speaking to Melody.
"Hey there, kiddo," he said, offering her a sticker. "Mind if I talk to your mom and dad for a minute?"
Melody nodded, focused on coloring a butterfly. Dennis and I stepped into the private consultation room across the hall.
"The hospital report confirms a severe anaphylactic event," Detective Vance began, opening a manila folder. "The paramedics documented the use of two EpiPens. We also have a statement from Ramona Vance, who witnessed the event, and several other family members who were present."
"What happens now?" Dennis asked. His hands were clasped tightly between his knees.
"Given the prior warnings, which multiple witnesses have confirmed, this goes beyond simple negligence," the detective explained. "The District Attorney is looking at a charge of felony child endangerment. Gloria Vance knowingly administered a substance that could cause grievous bodily harm or death to a minor under her care."
The word felony hung in the air like a physical weight. Dennis swallowed hard. Gloria was a proud woman, deeply concerned with her standing in the community and her church. A criminal charge of this magnitude would shatter her world.
"Do you want to press charges?" the detective asked me directly.

I looked through the glass window at Melody. "She almost died on that floor while Gloria called her dramatic. Yes. I want the law to do exactly what it is designed to do: protect children from people who hurt them."
Dennis placed his hand over mine. He didn't protest. He just squeezed my fingers, choosing us.
